Hi ladies - I feel like I've been posting constantly the past couple of weeks. Anyway - I just got my period two days ago for the first time since my son was born (6 months ago). I feel like I've gained 10 lbs in the past month and my period is extremely heavy. Is this normal? Have any of you had the same experience? Sorry - I realize this is personal and I sound like a 12 year old who just got her first period!!!! :)

What can I do next?

I am mom to 3 beautiful boys ages 11,8, and 5. After all 3 births( all c-sections) I had heavy periods for a while. According to my ob/gyn it takes some women's bodies a full year to return to normal. It all depends on what shape you were in before you gave birth, what type of birth (natural or c-section), what your periods were like before getting pregnant, etc... The first 3-6 will be the worst but then things should start slowly returning to normal. Keep in mind that normal after birth may not be what was normal before birth. After my last child was born my periods last anywhere from 4-7 days, can be very heavy or very light and after it goes away I still spot for up to 2 weeks. Hopefully this won't happen to you. I on the other hand get the joy of beginning early menopause at the ripe age of 36!!( according to my doctor) Don't worry, unless like a previous poster listed, you go through a pad or tampon every 1 1/2 hours. And congratulations!!

Hi M.-

First of all, congratulations! I too had a baby back in February and started my first period last Thursday. I had such a heavy period that I went into the ER. I have a history of Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and so I am use to heavy periods but this was so bad that I couldn't stand up without bleeding through. It was awful! Anyway, after 6 hours in the ER and some blood work, I was sent home and told that this is probably just because it is the first period after having the baby. My doctor confirmed that this was probably the case and so I am suppose to just get through it and see what happens with my next cycle. If it's still the same, then he will do an ultrasound.

As a side note, I bled for 2 1/2 months after having a c-section.

Anyway, I hope this helps. My recommendation, based on my experience, is to just get through it unless you are bleeding so bad that you are feel you are Anemic (spelling?). I would, however, mention it to your Doctor with the next visit...just in case.

Good luck.

Hi M.,
Totally normal. My first periods after both of my children were horrible! The cramping and bleeding and water gain were terrible!! After that first one, it does get better. Truly, it seems like your cycle gets a little wacky and it takes about 2-3 months to get back on schedule. It does get better though, even though it was SO nuce not having it for 9 months! :~) MOTRIN and MIDOL worked for me! And please now, nothing is ever too personal. That's why they have sites like this and we've ALL been through it! :~)

Good luck!

Hey M.:

Yes this too happened to me, mostly clotting soon after having my daughter. And getting your period back feels soooo weird, but eventually from my experience it'll all balance out and things will get back on track. Let your body do its thing, and keep extra pads in the bag, bc each time you get your period will be a different experience.

Hope this helps!

The first postpartum period is SUPER heavy, at least for me. I called the doctor because I was so worried. But they said as long as you don't fill a pad or tampon in an hour and half your okay. Mine have remained heavy but my guess is it is because I have a fibroid. I suppose if you period stays heavy over the next several cycles you could talk to you gyn. I plan on it at my next annual.

Isn't it great that you get so much support on-line? What did we do before this?

Anyway, as we all know, each of us is different, yet we are all female and we all have hormones. Having children definitely upsets the hormone balance and I have come to find that you don't have to suffer! There are natural hormone balancing cremes so that you don't have to end up going through months of torture and you help your body get back to normal much quicker with the creme. Even if you are normal (who is?) and you have bad cramps, headaches, heavy flow, etc. associated with your menstral cycle, it all revolves around our hormones. This natural way to restore balance in your body has long been on the market and heavily researched. If you are interested in something like this, please let me know. Or any one of you who still continues to battle with "being a woman". I know we wouldn't trade our positions for the world! Best of luck and congrats too-----

Hi M.,

Well, after my secod baby, I felt like a 12 year old with her first period!! Very heavy, lots of cramping, feeling like poo...understood why some girls used to take a day off school!!! PMS was very bad too. Felt very out of control...but now things are evening out a little bit, as my hormones stabalize again. Hang in there.

My first period was heavy and tapered off a little after a few months, but was never light again :(. I had horrible cramps before I had my son, but after they were gone. Sounds all normal to me!!! I hope it lessens next month.

Just a side note being a women sucks at times.
I remember I had heavy periods for couple months after each child not fun at all If it goes on to long go see your Doc
I do believe this happens till your hormones straighten themselves back out After a couple of months with mine being heavy I stopped having cramps and it wasn't heavy at all. It is that whole hormone thing and we are all different. Then just think when we get older we have to go through a whole bunch of different changes I can't wait for the day when it is gone completely.

Yes, it's totally normal for your period to have a shift after a baby is born. Both times it has seemed heavier than ever before and after my daughter was born I now have cramps and get super cranky when I was pretty blessed before. I also suspect mine is even heavier this time because I didn't go back to the pill, but am using an IUD instead. The hormones in the pill help lighten and regulate some of that out.

Totally normal. But I would say if it's to the point that nothing is holding the amount and you are having heaving clotting, call your ob/gyn. Ah, the joys of womanhood.

me too... since I am breast feeding, I'm taking a different kind of birth control pill, I'm actually havin 2 p's a month... and it is really annoying b/c that's when I may be the horniest... yup, very personal. I'm taking Errin pill but I feel like my whole body has changed after birth. The body does change to a certain degree. Even after feeling all the crazy hormones b4 and now...I still rather be a WOMAN than a man. Good luck it should get better and you have some good advice above! :)
