I would call a few and see if there are any that you feel like you connected with on the phone. Just because someone else thinks someone is good does not mean you will too. Talk to them about their approach to the issue and determine if you think it is a good fit for your adolescent.

My daughter had a teacher that she loved. My neighbor's daughter had a miserable year with the same teacher.

I think you may get referrals because you wisely put your location in your title. A lot of people get the "feed" for local issues as well as the subject matter they have requested.

A friend of mine (long time educator) has a 20-something who had significant issues as a child. They used Dr. Vincent DeSantis in Wellesley and she recommended him just now when I requested referrals.

I am also acquainted with Dr. Beth Greenberg, currently at Jewish Family Services in Worcester but soon joining the faculty of Becker College. She would have a lot of referrals for you. There's also Dr. Marie Caparso in Worcester. Both of these women are psychologists.

I'll let you know if I get more responses from friends/colleagues.

But you can also call your child's pediatrician or your primary care physicians for referrals to people who accept your insurance.

Don't be afraid to try more than one person to get someone your teen clicks with, although letting them know they can shop around forever can delay the positive effects of counseling.

I wouldn't worry about finding reviews on websites - referral websites are usually for practitioners who are members of that association. They pay a fee to be listed and they aren't going to go on anything that has negative reviews. Negative reviews can also be from people who didn't want to take the practitioner's advice or who weren't invested in the therapeutic process - it doesn't always mean the counselor was sub-standard.

Edited to Add: I got a message from a friend who raised 3 teens that Cindy Bell in Westborough is fantastic. 18 Lyman Street, same plaza on Route 9 (near Route 30) that houses Marshall's and Staples. There are offices on the second floor of several of the buildings in the plaza.

When we needed a therapist for my daughter we got some referrals from her regular doctor's office, and the school psychologist. We tried two before we found one that "fit".
Since the people on this website are from all over the country I'm not sure that you'll get many, if any, local referrals.
Good luck!

We just met with Dennis McGowan in Canton...might be a little far for you but he seems pretty good.

If you're looking for someone who can do meds, Dr. Louis Nemser in Needham Center has also been good for us.

It's too bad this thing isn't the kind of thing you can just comfortably post on FB, right? I'm sure many people in my circle of acquaintances have good referrals but I don't what to just throw it out there and invite speculation on "what's wrong with the Smith family?"
