A Few More Breastfeeding Questions

1) I know this is a common question, but I don't know the answer. My daughter is (blessedly) beginning to sleep longer at night. She is sleeping a little over 6 hours, and I suspect she would sleep longer, but at 6 hours, I'm awake and in pain because I'm engorged, and so I have been getting her up to feed. How can I last a little longer so that I can encourage her sleeping (and get some of that extra sleep myself)?

2) My daughter will not feed with her head covered. I live in a very conservative area, and although I haven't gotten any nasty looks about feeding in public yet, I did when I had my son, so I'm uncomfortable. Are there any tricks to feeding in public when your child won't tolerate a blanket or nursing cover over her head?

3) My daughter got her first round of vaccines on Monday. She is on an alternate schedule, but still received the DTaP and Rotavirus vaccine. Since Monday, her eating habits have changed dramatically! She only ate about 3 times a day and once at night Tuesday and Wednesday, and hasn't had many wet diapers, either. She also seemed reluctant to latch and would let go after several minutes on the breast. I was going to call the doctor, but then last night and this morning she latched fine. Could this be in reaction to the vaccines? My son never reacted to the vaccines in any way, so I don't know if this is common. Is it a nursing strike? Is she just not hungry? Anyone know what could be going on?

Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for your advice.

1) You're right! After about a week of nighttime engorgement and pumping, I'm not in that much pain anymore. It resolved itself. Yay!

2) I found a nursing cover that has a big opening at the neck, called a Bebe Au Lait, and my daughter doesn't seem to know her head is covered when she can look up and see me! It makes public nursing a lot less nerve-wracking.

3) I'm shocked, but it appears it was the vaccines. My daughter went through 3 days of basically eating only every 4-5 hours after her vaccines, and now is back to normal. Since my son never even got cranky after his vaccines, I was caught off guard. I guess I'll have to watch my daughter more carefully after vaccines, so make sure she doesn't have any reactions. Thank you.

1~I pumped when I was engorged at night... If I thought she would wake up hungry in a short while I would only pump enough to make myself comfortable.

2~sorry, I can't help you there... I was never comfortable nursing in public, so I usually either pumped and fed her a bottle, or would sit in the car with a blanket over the window.

3~My DD lost her appetite for about 3 days every time she got vaccinated... I would keep an eye on her today, let it go if she's back to normal, call the pediatrician if not... just to be safe. :)

Late answer, but this helps me with public feedings:

Granted, people here don't much care, but I am a bit shy about it, especially as I now have one who won't eat with his head covered and spends at least as much time looking around as nursing. For me, these clothes work better than a cover.

Oh and YAY for 6 hours of sleep! : )

I agree with the others on pumping to relieve the pressure and letting her sleep. Your body will adjust. I'm also not completely comfy nursing in public and my kids didn't like their faces covered either. I would usually cover them from the side. Maybe up to their chin so people would have to be staring to see anything:) You may just want to practice different techniques to find one you both feel comfortable with. As far as her vaccines I think it is normal for babies to feed differently while their little body is adjusting. However, if she causes you real concern it never hurts to speak to your nurse or dr. Good luck to you!

Re: nursing in public - I wore easy to use nursing bras and a shirt that was sort of loose on the bottom (often also a tank top). Once she was latched on, a would just sort of let my shirt fall over just enough of her face that things were private. A loose scarf can acheive the same effect. This required some practice, finesse and in the end confidence that people were just going to have to deal with it if there was a fleeting glance of boob. My daughter just weaned at 1 1/2 and I really never got any crappy reactions from people. Happy nursing!

Express just enough to releive the pressure. your milk flow will adjust to the babys demand. If you keep waking her she will adjust to your demand!
Nursing a baby is a natural, healthy and beautiful gift. Some women can be gross about it and expose entirely too much. If you open only one side at a time and hold the baby in front of you, not much is exposed. If this bothers people they are too bad! Baby needs to eat.
I never allow more than one vaccine at a time. Too much put in a tiny baby at once is sure to mess with their system. Does she have a fever? It sounds like she is doing better now, but if she shows any changes after any immunizations you should call the doc.
Best wishes
