9 Month Old Super Cranky Non Sleeping Boy, Please Help

I'm lost, my older son didn't have these problems. Last night my 9 month old son didn't want to go to sleep, not completely uncommon for him but then woke up at 3 AM completely uncommon for him. I know he just broke his two top teeth through a few weeks ago and is working on 2 more but this screaming has to stop. He is also screaming the whole time we are eating dinner, he eats table food but doesn't feed himself yet so it is a battle for me to get him to eat. I guess I'm just looking for similar stories just to make me feel like this is completely normal. A little background we did just move in with my in laws over the weekend, our house sold before we could get our new home loan figured out. My boys are sharing a room but they have both been fine up until last night. Please just tell me this will pass and I will get more than 5 hours of sleep again soon. LOL

Added: He goes to an in home daycare so his weekly schedule is unchanged and so his naps during the week are unchanged. I completely forgot to add this. He had 4 8 ounce bottle in a day so he is getting enough nutrition from formula. If I don't feed him dinner he is even more of a terror and wakes up even more. We use the generic motrin and tylenol from Target so we are good with the recall meds.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies, we will do the motrin/tylenol thing. We don't want to do Orajel, it has a stimulate in it and can actually make the pain worse in the long run. He eats almost all the same table food we eat, with the exception of meat I haven't gotten brave enough to give him that yet. He does still eat baby food (at daycare, his provider is scared to give him table food and she is on the food program and we don't provide food for him) and cereal for breakfast. I just hope this passes, I'm stressed to the max.

Awwwww...poor little guy! Teething sucks! Are you giving him some Tylenol? Wet, quarter fold and freeze a stack of baby washcloths then give him O. to gnaw on when he seems crabby.
How's he napping? Has his nap schedule remained in tact throughout the move? Maybe he's over tired?
He WILL get through this and so will you. Hang in there, Mama!

pain killers. Poor thing, his mouth hurts and that is why he isn't eating. Generic Tylenol will help. totally normal for 9 month old.

what about baby food.. and baby cereal.. is he having that too. do you put things on his tray when he eats.. like big noodles, pieces of fruit like a banana ... small cheerios... he should be able to feed himself these things.. or a biter bisquit... those bisquits are messy but they love to bite on them.. gerber makes them.. try some zweibeck cookies too... these might help him with his mouth... give him motrim one hour before he goes to bed.. this may help.. and make sure his bottle is cold.. the cold will soothe his teeth.. try giving him a bath before bed.. this may help too.. good luck

Sounds like the move and/or teething could be the problem. It's a transition, a phase, and I bet is passes. It might be tough for you for a few nights, but in 2 weeks time I bet it is a faded memory. Hang in there.

My wife and daughters use orogel (sp?).

Babies are NOT good at handling hurt or even discomfort. Cold helps numb the discomfort or hurt. I recommend popcycles made from fruit, not just cold/frozen sugar-water. My son fell and cut his lip on some stairs. He got 11 stitches. When the pain medication wore off, Dreyers frozen fruit pops helped tremendously. His favorite was strawberry.

Good luck.

The teething will pass and others have good suggestions - just make sure you're not using one of the recalled J&J products for pain relief.

I think the mealtime is multiple issues. He doesn't feel well, but also you should not be battling a 9 month old to eat solids or you are setting yourself up for lots of problems down the road. For infants under one year, solids should not be a big source of nutrition - breastmilk and formula are the basic source of nutrition for infants. The use of solids under one year is primarily to help them get used to eating solids, so that they can more easily transition off the bottle or breast over time. At this age, my sons would eat finger foods like cheerios or even frozen peas - this keeps them busy while you're trying to eat. I would then offer a little of the soft foods we were eating - rice, potatoes and sometimes feed the jarred baby food. Also, I would nurse my sons before the rest of us sat down to eat. So, you might try giving him is bottle or nursing before mealtime - nursing is particularly helpful as it's very calming for a baby.

Also, with the move, he just may need more comfort than normal. So, while it can be a pain, you and your husband might take turns holding him at mealtime.
