9 Month Old Son Refuses Bottle and Sippy Cup

My son has recently (the past week) refused to drink his formula. He used to drink 3 bottles of it a day (24 oz. total). He loved it! Now, he pushes it away! I tried putting it in a sippy cup and he refuses. The only way he will take any liquids is if it's water or watered down juice in an adult cup, through a straw-where it's fed to him through the bottom of the straw, or spoon fed to him. I noticed he was grumpy last week from teething and I thought this would subside within a couple of days, but now we're going on week number 2 and I'm worried he's not getting enough liquid. I know he's probably getting some liquid from the baby food he eats and the finger foods we give him, but not anything close to the 24 oz. he was getting from formula. He isn't wetting his diaper as much, but his stools are still pretty moist, so I don't think he's dehydrated. We give him Tylenol when he's inconsolable. We've tried the numbing cream, but that doesn't seem to work.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is this just a phase due to teething?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My son is now drinking his formula regularly from his sippy cup. I guess it was due to his teething!

Hi Kristy, he mat be refussing the formula, becasue he doesn't have the need for it that he once had, I know for my babies, they only from 9 months to a year they only had one formula bottle a day and that was in the morning while I was getting their cereal ready. In the heat the water intake is really good for him, also at 9 months there is much table food he can eat, and get the nutrition that he was getting from all the formula, the fact tnhat he is refusing the bottle, that could thing, let him drink out of a straw, kids love to drink from straws. I know how you feel, my son started at 8 months and he kept it up until he was 3 years old!!! The only thing I could think to do was give him lots and lots of applesauce because every doctor said it was a phase and he would grow out of it. Then we discovered that he would drink out of a cup with a straw and he still does. But maybe giving your child teething tablets and baby orajel before he drinks a bottle to help with the pain because sucking does make the pain worse. Good Luck

My son went through that briefly with teething, but I don't think it lasted that long. Check with pediatrician. But in the meantime, try mixing his formula in with his baby food. That worked for us. Good luck.

Hi Kristy, have you tried the orajel and the frozen teething toy? that might help with the teething discomfort, and may encourage him to take the bottle. Also if he is not wetting the diaper much you might want to take him to the pediatrician or the ER before he gets severly dehydrated and ill. Also keep on giving him liquids with a straw but don't give him juices, give him pedyalite or gatorade. You need to keep him hydrated and also try giving the frozen pedyalite pops they will keep him hydrated and the cold will help his teething.

I would call his doctor ASAP! He may have an ear infection or something that's bothering him. If he's not wetting his diapers as much he may be dehydrated. Call the doctor today!

hey if hes teething bad and not wanting to eat i would suggest using the gentle naturals teething drops (like 15 mins before eating) and also give him tylenol or motrin like morning noon and night (or every 4 hours if you have to) you dont want him to get dehydrated so you should try to fix the problem. i loved the teething drops they are the only thing that worked for my daughter. i would use them asap.

Hello, Kristi,

I am a nutrition coach and have something in mind that will be living and very nutritious for your son. My daughter (and her friends that come by) love it. No dead juice out of a can, bottle or carton that just produce acid and gives unnecessary sugar. No isolated vitamins, no colors or chemicals, no deadly sugar substitutes-- just living food. And it truly hydrates and supports the bodies cells, organs and systems.

Let me know what you think.

My very best,

T.

Since you're going on week 2, I would think that it may not be related to teething. From what I have heard, and from my limited experience with my two babies, teething troubles only last for a couple of days at a time. As for it being a phase, I don't know. It could be. Again, in my limited experience, "phases" with babies don't usually last so long (phases last longer as they get older:).

My firstborn also loved his formula then he suddenly refused it, but he was 11 1/2 months old at the time, so we just went to milk. But at 9 months, he still really needs all of the nutrients from formula or breastmilk, so I would talk to his pediatrician right away to figure out how you can supplement with other foods. Maybe try a different formula? I know that is an expensive experiment, but it might work. Otherwise, keep offering him lots of water and watered-down juice, and find out how to supplement with the other nutrients he needs. Iron is easy enough to supplement with food (oatmeal and raisins are a great source and my babies loved that from early on) but I don't know where he can get the DHA/RHA and if there are other critical nutrients he needs from formula.

I'm sure he will be fine, this is just one of the many puzzles we have to learn to solve as parents. But there is a solution and I'm sure you will find it. I wish you the best!

Make sure he doesnt have thrust in his mouth how yo can tell is look at his tongue it would look white maybe a little spotted, this makes the tongue really sore babies wont suck when they have it, its a yeast infection in the mouth dont freak its not uncommon, sometimes they catch it from you or from something else, I can not recall if fever is something that goes hand in hand with this. The teething could also be a factor.. I always say check with the doctor

Yikes. Make sure he is having at least 5 wet diapers/day, if not he is not getting enough hydration and you need to see the pediatrician to rule out why he isn't drinking...throat or mouth illness or injury?

hi kristi. my guy is 10 1/2 mths and still doesn't like the sippy cup but does take the bottle and still breastfeeding too. as far as the formula refusal, that's pretty serious since he still needs the nutrition from the formula as well as the amount of liquid esp. if his BMs are dry and wets infrequently. Maybe try switching formula brands. are you giving him the older baby one now? you maybe should call dr. just to get his/her feedback esp. if this has been going on a couple days. also, he should be onto more finger foods by now which may help him with the chewing need with teething(frozen bagels, cheerios, fruit...). hope this helps :)

yes! this has happpened to me around the time of teething too. it's almost like it hurts for them to suck. poor babies. :( but what scares me more is what you mention about his hydration. and @ 9 months, formula is still a big part of his nutrition. keep on doing whatever it takes to get him to drink. you might even want to help him with a cup. you'd be surprised what kids can do. just don't expect not to have a mess. and hang in there! teething seems like such a long process, but it does get better.

Sounds like he's getting dehydrated, that's not good. Call your doctor right away. Have you tried Hylands Teething Tablets and oragel and/or infant tylenol?
