My daughter is almost 9 months old and she has 5 teeth - 2 on the bottom and 3 on top. Lately she's been grinding her teeth, and I can't think of a way to get her to stop. Is this normal or should I be worried about it?

What can I do next?

My 1 year old started grinding her teeth about 2 months ago. About a week and a half after grinding her teeth she had 3 more pop up! In her case, she was grinding because it also felt good on her swollen gums...and it helped the other teeth break through. When it got really bad, I would take a cool wet washcloth and rub her gums...she seemed to stop grinding for a while after that. My pedi said that grinding is very common in this age group!

Doesn't it just sound terrible?!!! Like nails on a chalk board! Yikes!

My son has been doing that since he was 7 months old and my friend's baby does it too. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

My daughter is 2 and has been doing the same thing for quite a while. I asked the pediatrician about it and was told that the reason a child grinds their teeth is due to the teeth not being aligned (overbite or underbite). With them being so young, there really isn't anything that can be done. It won't become a concern until they are older and getting their adult teeth in.

Hi M.,

My son did that around 9 months, too. I asked the doctor and he said it's just a phase. It should be short lived, but I know that sound is horrible. Does she take a pacifier? If so, place it in the freezer or frig for a few mins, that helps soothe sore gums.

Good luck,
