8 Weeks Pregnant- Enlarged Uterus

A couple days ago, I had a medical issue that was unrelated to my pregnancy & went to the ER. They ended up doing an ultrasound, because of concern it could've been a pregnancy complication but everything with the baby looked good. Except, for one thing & I wonder if anyone has any insight...

I was 8 weeks exactly, the day of the U/S. So, theTech wanted to do a transvaginal to get a better look & she couldn't really get a good look ( she said that was odd). She then tried it normally, through the abdomen. She was able to see everything she needed because she said the top of my uterus ( fundus) was already a couple inches below my belly button & that's where the baby was hanging out. I'm really concerned that there could be something wrong. That is really high for only being 8 weeks. She only saw 1 baby & measured me at 8 weeks 1 day. Has anyone experienced, such a size difference ?I should add that it's my 4th baby, so I'm sure that could be part of the reason.

I have my 1st doc appt. next week, so hopefully my doc has some insight . He's also really thorough & I guarantee when I express concern , he will take a look but you know how it goes...? I'm sitting here worrying & thought I would ask, if anyone has experienced this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

MartyM. -- Yes, I made the mistake of searching & found 1 site that a midwife states an enlarged uterus wih extra fluid could be a sign of a problem with the baby. The tech didn't mention any extra fluid or seem concerned, it wasn't even noted on the report but now I'm worried.

*** Had my doc appt. at 9 weeks. He said he my uterus seemed the size of 12 to 13 weeks. He said that it's probably scar tissue, due to my previous 3 sections.

Ah yes... I asked the same question a year ago. Yes. This happened to me. I was about 8 weeks pregnant, but "measured" closer to 10 weeks. I panicked and posted. Twins run in both of our families and I also Googled it...

Here's what my OBGYN said to me after I called him sobbing...

Measurements are estimates based on averages. Every woman's body is different. Each pregnancy is different. As long as there are no elevations in your blood work and nothing comes up on the ultrasound, don't worry about it.

Everything evened-out in the end. My daughter was a singleton. She was actually quite small. I did not deliver early. He also told me that it's not unusual for this to occur following a c-section b/c of scar tissue and the fact that your uterus never really returns to it's original size. Considering that this is your4th pregnancy... no worries.

Dr. Google is NOT your friend! Do not google any potential issues - you will always find one site that tells you that you're doomed. It doesn't help!

But yeah, some women just have larger uteruses, and with every pregnancy, your uterus inflates quicker. That said, I know a few women with twins that weren't detected until 9 or 10 weeks. =)

When I went to my ob about 6 weeks pregnant with my 2nd he thought for sure I either was having twins or further along then I thought because he could already feel my uterus. They a regular ultrasound and couldnt see much so did a vaginal and they saw my single 6 week pregnancy. Stay off the Internet you'll drive yourself crazy!

If that measurement was the ONLY thing that was supposedly unusual, then it's very unlikely that anything is wrong at this point. Good luck.

With all three of my kids, they thought I was carrying twins. Each time, cause I measured so large in the early weeks. All three were carried high, almost under my rib cage. My rib cage would ache till they would drop down in the last months, Its just where they liked to hang out. I had to have monthly ultra sounds, never had a problem with any of the pregnancies, however my second was born with a condition that they not sure if its genetic, positional, or hereditary. She had Craniosynostosis and Torticollis.

I had an enlarged uterus because of fibroids, which I didn't know I had until I found out I was pregnant. I looked way past 6 weeks when i had my first vaginal and regular ultrasound. The thing about fibroids is that they can grow right along with the baby. They feed on the extra hormone and blood supply. Never google a symptom. I learned that the hard way. If the ultrasound was good, go with that unless you are told otherwise.
