Okay, so I have this intelligent, highly active, talkative 7yr old boy who recently and i mean in the last 2weeks is afraid of EVERYTHING. He will not go into the kitchen unless i go with him, to the bathroom unless i go with him, to his bedroom, unless i go with him, outside, unless i go with him...to be honest its driving me nuts! Is this a cry for attention?? or is he really scared? He woke up last night in the middle of the night and had to use the bathroom (i leave on a trail of lights, its a 2 bed apt, bathrooms not really that far...) and he refused to go to the bathroom unless I went with him. I said no, he was capable of going to the bathroom by himself, im awake and right here... (i just happened to be crashed out in his bed) and... nope.. peed his pants. Am i missing something? Nothings changed, we've lived in the same apt for two years? I really am at a loss... for whats going on in his brain.. i asked him... why? and he said because of the Resident Evil movie preview thats on TV.. He knows its not real, im thinking it must be deeper then that? is there anything anyone can suggest? I already moniter the video games/tv...?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Everyone for the Advice! It hasn't gotten tooooo much better, but theres a small improvement, and patience...=) I'm practicing. I made "Burglar Blocker" (febreeze and water in a spray bottle, with.. burglar blocker written on it) and invested in a spider man night light, that sparkles like little stars in his room, and we hung up a dream catcher over his bed. So every night now, we spray the house for burglars and laugh about it, we turn on his night light, and I "take" his bad dreams and thoughts out of his head and "put" them away in the dream catcher, then I take my happy dreams and happy thoughts, and "place" them in his head, so we can share them while he sleeps. He knows its not "real" persay.. but it seems to comfort him and make him happy before bed, and he hasnt had any problems sleeping anymore or using the bathroom. And during the day... i just keep reminding him that there is nothing to be afraid of and the TV commercials/movies are not real!

It might not just be Resident Evil preview...SAW IV preview is on too. I have to close my eyes and ears and/or quickly mute it and/or change the channel. I got scared as a kid watching Poltergeist and JAWS. I was afraid for the longest freaking time to go swimming in the pool. If he has any dolls in his room or even the stuffed animals, I'd hide them for the time being. It's freaky enough. My kid is 3.5y.o. and he gets scared of the mean kid in Toy Story or any scary halloween stuff even on Winnie the Pooh or Thomas the Train when some of the trains look mad or cranky.

Hi L., my son is now 11 and he went through that as well. It got easier after a while, but he also got scared because of the Chucky ads on TV. I have to still listen to the shower running while he takes a shower and peeks out the door to make sure it is open and we are in the living room. Crazy, but what are we supposed to do. I will say That the beginning is hard. I don't know really what we are supposed to do, but be their for him . He is not a baby, but i tell him sometimes that he is not five anymore and to grow up. I really don't fight it because it just always sees to make things worse. Good Luck. Dumb TV and probably me for not keeping it on the baby channels. (HAHAHA> J>J>) My neighbors 12yr old still has to sleep with the lights on not even a night light. My only advice is to take it slow. Ease back in to the normal things. It is probably like a step back in the security areas, but they will gain the comfort levels back over time.

I personally have an irrational fear of zombies (and clowns ::poltergiest::). When I was younger I would get myself so worked up just laying in bed, that I would be TERRIFIED to get out of bed to get a drink or use the bathroom unless someone got up to turn the light on for me. Just the SONG from twilight zone made me have to run into my room and plug my ears and sing loud (because of the first scene from the movie where the one guy in the car with dan akroid asked if he wanted to see something REALLY scary) I think it is absolutely REDICULOUS that the networks air horror movie commercials during the day.

All I can tell you is, even though he knows zombies aren't real, just bear with him when he needs you. Eventually he will be able to push it out of his mind, and he will have to get over it himself. Just don't make fun of him for being scared, and don't share this info with his friends or family members with kids around his age. (you can get even with him by telling his wife down the road ;) ) TIVO is a blessing, if you record the shows you want to watch, you can just forward through the commercials. Halloween is coming, and the commercials and movies are only going to get scarier. Keep him away from the tv.

I've never been overly religious, but I started praying to God to protect me from everything I was afraid of. That helped me a little. Good luck and try to be patient.

As I was reading your email, all I could think of was that he saw a movie thatr eally scared him, then I get to the end of your letter and there it was.....he saw something on tv. Those commercials are very scary and inappropriate ads for little kids but how do we screen commercials for movies? Poor little guy. My neice went through a similiar thing and she still hasn't grown completely out of it. She used to have to sleep in a pitch black room until she got in her teens and decides to start watching horror films. Now she is 19 and still has to have the lights on. So I do believe your son that he saw something on tv that is giving him the chills. All I can suggest is that you talk to him about how silly those shows really are and how they make up everything just for fun......make it seem funny rather than scary. Good luck to you

I agree with the other person that wrote. I would be going to his school and asking the teacher if anything has happened at school. It sounds like something really traumatized him- I would sit him down and just try to beat around the bush to see if something slips out while he is talking. My son is 5 and would refuse to go into his room by himself until i showed him there was nothing to be afraid of and had him playing with stuff in there by himself. But for your son to be 7 and doing this something besides that commercial has happened and now the pyscologist in you has to work to find out. Good luck but i would start with the school.

Hi L., I'm sorry to hear what you're going through. I have a 7.5 year old son and haven't experienced anything like it. Have you asked his teacher if he is experiencing the same behavior at school? Has he been left alone with someone that he's not used to? Does your school have a someone that he/and you could speak with? Just a few questions I would be asking if it were me going through your situation. Good luck and please let me know if you find out anything that could be helpful.

Sorry, my laptop just "thought for itself again". I hate the touch pad. Anyway the book is called "That's my Son". It's a wonderful book in my opinion, I've tried some of the techniques and have had success. Take care, I hope your little guy can replace those scary thoughts with much happier ones!
