7Th Gen. Diaper Question

I just bought my 11lb. 4 week old son a pack of size one 7th Gen. diapers. We were using Pampers but they were irritating his bottom and finally he isn't all chapped but I'm finding the 7th Gen. diapers are not soaking up his breast fed poops as well as the pampers. Is this normal for these diapers? He hasn't leaked pee yet but when I go to change a poopy diaper it's practically falling out the sides. I was thinking maybe going up a size? They do fit a lot trimmer than the pampers did. Not sure if that's in the design or if I just have a big butt kid!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, I will try going up a size to see what happens. I would love to start cloth diapering at least while at home but my husband isn't too thrilled with the concept. I'm working on him...we'll see what happens - right now I like how hubby gets up to change the diaper before I feed the baby and I don't want that to change! :-)

Hi Amy,
We use cloth diapers, but at night time we use 7th Generation. I would definitely try going up a size to see if that helps.

Best of luck with your new little guy. They really are so much fun!!

We had the same problem, and going up a size helped. My son's daytime babysitter gave us her rule of thumb, "Have your baby's weight be the lowest weight listed on the diaper weight range." It worked wonders for us.

Congratulations on your baby!! Enjoy every second!

We didn't try 7th generation until our son was between 1 and 2 years old, and I really tried to use them for quite a while, but we had the same experience. The diapers just didn't hold pee or poop and we had to change him constantly. AT night, it was a mess every night, changing his bed linens multiple times during the night... we're a very "green" household, but my husband couldn't stand it anymore and we switched back to pampers. (our son has skin issues too but he was fine with the pampers...).
that said, I've known several families with girls who seemed to be fine with the 7th generation diapers. ONe friend says they prefer the whole foods 365 brand though. maybe try those. try a larger size... I don't recall being in a size 1 diaper for very long with our son, but he's 3 now so I kind of forget. I'm expecting a baby girl next month and am planning to start out right away with chlorine free diapers this time, hoping for better luck. there are more choices out there now. target even sells a chlorine free diaper... and I've seen several other brands available online that I haven't seen in stores... good luck!

I've actually never tried that brand before, but I have tried lots of different brands, and the best ones I've found have been the Luvs brand. They are a little bit wider in the butt, like the pampers, and they are super absorbant, and they're not super expensive. Either way, if you like the 7th gens, then stick with them, but he probably needs a bigger size - generally, if he's overflowing, that's when I decide our son needs a bigger size! However, if you do go a bigger size and he's still overflowing, then I would go with a different brand.

I haven't tried these particular diapers but I would also suggest trying cloth diapers. Both my kids have sensitive butts and cloth was much gentler on them- also way cheaper than those expensive diapers. And it is not as gross as you would think. I did it part-time (when we were home, when their butts were especially bad, overnight) and used Motherease diapers with covers. Try googling cloth diapers if it's something you are interested in.

Hello,
We have used these diapers from the start, and I have always found that using the next size up is the way to go. My daughter has always been a poop machine (and was breastfed as well), and I think they do keep you on your toes more in terms of leakage (we changed her as soon as we knew she had a poo in there), but going up a size always helped us, and she has rarely had an explosion overnight. I just got a new box of them and I see that the tabs are different than before (we're in size 3, so I don't know if this is a universal change), and they don't stretch as far for closing, so we'll definitely be going up a size with the next box. I have heard that the 'shape' of your baby also plays into how these diapers fit; my daughter has always been long and skinny, and they work great. Don't know if this helps or not! Good luck,
Jen

We have used 7th gen with both our 14 month old, and our 7 week old since they were born, I actually didn't think diapers were supposed to absorb poop. We always just went up a size when the blowouts began. I have found that 7th gen do run smaller. Our daughter is probably 10 or 11 lbs and she is barely fitting in size ones. Good luck.
