7 Year Old Still Having Bathroom Accidents

My son just turned 7 and he has never really controlled his bladder or bowel. He has gone to therapy, he is on medication and wears a watch alarm that vibrates every 2 hours to remind him to go, and he still has accidents. He just ignores the urge to go and decides to hold it to not stop playing or doing whatever until, of course, he can't hold any longer and has the accident. The doctors says it takes a long time to "re-train" him but nothing seems to work. I offered him a trip to Disney World if he is accident-free for a month and every time he has an accident is one day without TV, but even so no success.
Has anybody had a similar problem? Any suggestions? I don't know what to do any more.

What can I do next?

Dear C.
I truly understand what you are going thru. My son is 6 years old and has the same problem. This has been driving us nuts. He was diagnosed with ADHD a couple of months ago. I am not sure if this is the problem. However, I have an appointment with the psychologists to seek for help. I'm desesperate too! I have tried almost everything with no results. He goes back and forth. As soon as I come from my appointment I will let you know. Believe me I know what it feels. I know this doesn't help, but you are not alone. I guess we just have to be patient. In my experience, punishments have not resulted well so I just take a quick breath and move on. will keep in touch.

Yes, my son is almost 6 yrs old and he still has accidents too. He seems to have a withholding problem. He just doesn't want to let go. We are currently in the process of finding a therapist. He is a twin (but I lost his twin before he was born) I feel this is a big part of his problem. Sorry I don't have any advice, just wanted to comfort you in knowing you are not alone. I know your frustration, let me know if you find something that works.

Have you tried a chiropractor? They will work wonders for these issues. I have a great resource in the Melbourne area if you are interested. Hope you find some answers soon!

Hi C.,
I've not had this problem, but I do have a boy. I agree that you should make smaller, daily goals. Don't punish him with no t.v. if he has an accident. This is something that he really can't help. As with most boys, he is just simply too busy playing to think about it. Continue to encourage him, but not make a big deal out of the accidents. If you encourage and praise him, then I'm sure he'll figure it out. I think boys just need extra time. My son used to be very bladder shy and didn't like having anyone in the bathroom with him. This was a problem when he first started school and there was no stall in the bathroom. So this might be something to think about too.

Good luck!
