I would love it if any moms could help me out with this crazy skin reaction.
At 3 months my son woke up in the middle of the night for a feeding. I noticed that on the left side of his face he had a rash. After I turned the light on I noticed he also had some swelling and hives/ I ended up taking him the ER just to wait there for 2 ½ hrs and have it go away/ The doctor said that sometimes babies just react differently to certain viruses different. Well I would have been ok with that answer but this has happened 3 more time since than. First 2 times where after a nap and the other 2 times where during the day while he was playing. Another odd thing is that it only happens of the left side of his body. Mostly on his left foot, and that it also goes away in 3 hr. What if it doesn’t one day and gets worse ?I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! PLEASE HELP. The doctor just told me to keep an eye on it and write down when it happens. But being a new mom of twins I don’t have time just to wait and stair at his little foot.

What can I do next?

Has he had his vaccinations in the past few weeks?
It is very common to react to all of the horrible toxins in the vaccines with a rash. Google 'ingredients in vaccines' and you will see the chemicals that are in them and the reactions that they often cause.

Does benadryl make it go away? If so, it is an allergic reaction. If it does not...it could be some kind of virus.

I would make sure you are usually a free and clean laundry detergent and write down what he has eaten in the last 24 hours when it happens. Sounds like a food allergy. (Strawberries did that to my daughter).

It could also be a heat rash.

try switching laundry soap and see what happens... Make sure to wash all sheets and his clothes... What clothes is he wearing when it happens... Any snaps, buttons, appliques near the hives? Were they onsies (nothing covering the legs.) Did he have socks on or was his skin in direct contact with bedding, carpet, etc... It also could be a reaction to a bug bite. (my guys welt up when they get mosquito bites)

Also could be a slight reation to the formula (If he's on formula)

If its only happening on his left side consistantly I doubt it would be a reaction to shots or food...More of an enviromental thing... I would keep a log and note what he was doing for about an hour before the welts (If you can remember)... What rooms, what toys, etc...

I know reactions like that are scary... My 4 month old had a reaction to formula and welted up several times... They are so small and can't really say "mom... Help me... I don't feel right"... Thankfully with my guys all we had to do was trial and error new formula (ended up with soy)... His welts were all over his body though and HUGE!!!

I hope you figure out whats happening...

And if you do have to go to the hospital again remember that the squeaky wheel gets the oil... So go up to the desk every 15 minutes and ask them if the dr could just come out and LOOK BEFORE the welts go away... Take pics of the welts to show your dr...

My son had a similar skin rash as well. We never knew what it was. It just went away after a few hours. A friend did help me realize I had taken psuedofed that day for the first time since I started nursing him and it could have been a reaction to something in it. So, who knows, it could be a reaction to something you are eating or taking. Or, it could just be his way of dealing with a virus -- apparently very common.

My daughter got one once due to switching to a perfumed shampoo. My husband's entire body was once covered in that type of rash due to getting too hot/sweaty and another time due to a reaction to a cleaner used on a wet suit. I myself got those rashes constantly when living in a dryer climate as a result of stress/dry skin/and chalk dust(I was a teacher - always got the rash on the right side - the side I wrote on the board with!). I solved it for myself by going dye/perfume free in my detergent (and getting a dry erase board!).

My point is, it's quite common to get weird rashes that you can't always explain and they really aren't anything to worry about.

Please don't pay attention to the comment about vaccines. They are quite safe. If you are at all concerned about them, please talk to your pediatrician about it.

I would make sure you use perfume/dye free detergent and baby hygiene products to help eliminate that as a cause.

It is hard to say what is causing your son's hives... but it is not always something serious. My youngest gets hives everytime he gets cold... be it outside on a cold winter day or swimming in cool water. He gets huge ugly red welts that last only until he warms up again. Not sure if this helps any... but maybe your son's have a simple cause also.

Hi,
Honestly this sounds like a simple contact dermatitis, basically a rash due to an irritant. I know its scary but if it isnt hurting him i.e. causing breathing trouble or spreading, this is most likley the cause. My son used to get them CONSTANTLY! And it was always gone within half a day to. try putting some hydrocortisone on it this should take care of it. Chances are hes just a sensitive little guy :) You can try some of the other advice also as in seithching laundry soap but Im betting that isnt it only because you said the rash only happens occasionally. If anything like that it may just be that his sheets/blankets didnt get completly rinsed out in the rinse cycle. Anyways good luck and feel free to contact me if you need to.

That sounds awful. Poor mama and poor baby!

Do you give him solid foods? If so, keep a log of what you're giving him. Food allergies don't have to show up right away, in fact they can take a little while to surface. Try keeping a log of everything he eats for a few days and see if you notice a pattern.

Are you breastfeeding? If so, take a look at what you're eating. It's not likely this is the culprit but it couldn't hurt to be sure.

Do they have any new toys? Anything that his twin could have that he might be allergic to that the twin is not (for instance, a fabric lovey or latex pacifier)? What about cleaning products that could have made their way onto him (either by way of him rolling into something recently cleaned or if you clean something and then pick him up).

It has to be something. I definitely recommend taking a very thorough look at everything that's in your house and taking note of it.

Finally, if your doctor isn't taking you seriously you should go find a new doctor. Your little one depends on you to be his advocate, and it's incredibly hard to speak to someone who won't listen.

Good luck!

22 and mom of twins?! You have your hands full...kudos to you! First thing that comes to mind is detergent, softener, soaps, shampoo...etc. Other than that, my son used to break out in hives after eating prepared foods, such as the grilled chicken strips that you put on salads, etc. It was the sulfites in the preservatives. He may also, just have sensitive skin and sweating may cause a little rash during sleep. Of course, keep an eye on it like the doc said. Writing down when you notice it will help you (or doc) find a pattern. No need to spend all of your time waiting for a rash, it won't take long to find the culprit and the journaling is the only way to communicate to your doc exactly what is going on. He/She is trained to see things that we don't know and there is no way you can remember when, where, what took place without jotting it down.

Relax a little bit and think it through. Maybe you will find the cause on your own. He'll be okay...

BTW...you'll find a lot of uninformed advice on vaccines. They are not toxins, they are carefully formulated ways to prevent deadly, debilitating, horrible diseases that have been successfully eradicated in our country because of them. Definitely do your research, blind faith is no help...but neither is ridiculous belief that the government is out to poison your child! :)

maybe it's a heat rash from laying on his face while he sleeps that clears up once the area cools down?
