7-Month Old with Poor Circulation?

First off, I must say that my husband and I are some very pale individuals. Hence, our daughter is too. I have noticed over the past month or so that when she is held for an extended period of time, the bottoms of her little feet turn blue or purple.
Then when I was changing her this morning, she was shoving her foot against the wall and when I moved her foot to put the diaper on, her toes stayed white (Really WHITE) for a long time.
Is this common? Should I go see our MD ASAP?

Please check the update I posted. I have already checked with my pediatrician. Thanks!

So What Happened?

I talked to my Pediatrician who eased my worries. She said they expect the blue or purple feet in pale babies and in babies in general. She said that as long as they return to their normal color when not held, then she will be fine. Phew!

I took my oldest who is now 5 to the doctor when she was six months for the exact same thing and she told me not to worry and it was completely normal. She said you can never tell if a baby is cold or warm or even how the circulation is by thier feet or hands. They naturally have poor circulation so thier hands and feet stay pretty cold and blue, some more than others. I would say dont worry about it unless your mothers intuition is telling something is really wrong then it cant hurt the get her checked out by the doc.

To ease your mind, I would definitely let my PCP know of my concerns. But..... My younger children and I are also very pale and turn white very easily. For example if I cross one leg over the other, when I uncross them, I have white spots on my legs where they pressed together. This lasts for quite a while.

You might want to check with our physician on this. She could be lacking something in her diet or not getting enough exercise. I would let her explore on the floor where she can roll around and build up her muscle tone. You might have to sit with her at first and then slowly give her some freedom by watching from a distance, put some fun colorful toys with her so she has something to reach for.
Many Blessings, C.

Dear J.,
That problem sounds really familiar because my daughter was the same-very light skinned, and sometimes with purple legs (only when she was being held though). Don't worry! Usually, their circulation will be back to perfect within a couple of minutes once you put her down, its just the way that we hold them; on our stomachs or hips, with our arm underneath, trying to hold them tight so that they don't fall. That kind of position doesn't hurt them (or else she would be crying), but it makes them feel safe and loved. Also, only take your daughter to the doctor if she stayes with purple legs or arms for an extended period of time-like hours- and the color doesn't return within a few minutes. Hope you think its helpful!!

yes, i do think you need to have her looked at by her pediatrician, make sure he/she listens to her heart and lungs thoroughly.

Has she had a test for anemia? My daughter was tested and determined to be anemic during infancy. I then started giving her vitamins with iron in her cereal. I am anemic and breastfed exclusively, so I also had to be sure I was taking my iron supplements during that time. When she was a little older the nurse practitioner at the pedi's office said one thing they look for is "capillary refill." I guess this basically means that when you squeeze their finger or something, they look to see how quickly that area turns pink again. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capillary_refill). When does she go back for a well-check? Can you call the nurse at your doctor's office and see if she thinks it is something that needs to be checked right away?
