Hello there,
i think that 6 is awful young to hold onto 50 dollars. My kids got a 75 dollar card plus 25 cash for christmas from relatives. We recently went shopping and i held onto the 10 and 11 year olds cards till they got down to under 20 dollars.. I would definately replace the money and card.. Kids are very used to putting things down to pick up something and forgetting it.. If he does not carry a wallet every day in his pocket then he is not used to having it. Carrying it around for a couple hours 1 or 2 times a week is not used to it.. My son still only carries his when he has got money and he is 11.. I would follow some others advise about replacing it this time but explaining that from now on he can keep a certain amount maybe his age.. You are 6 you get to hold onto 6 dollars but if you lose it it is lost and i wont replace it.. Also if you take the 6 dollars and put it into bills it feels like more.. Let him hold an empty card too.. Makes them feel important especially if it is there empty card that only has change or nothing left on it.. But encourage him to carry it and ask him periodically when you are out, do you have your wallet? Where is your wallet? Can i see your wallet please? All ways to get him to remember to keep checking himself.. All things that will work in the futere.. And you both learned a a valuable lesson.. I would definately replace them both this time..
Good luck to you..
