So my 6 week old was born with really long beautiful golden hair (about 2 in) and when she gets put down for sleep she sometimes ( 3 times yesterday ) gets her hand by her head and pulles her hair. I know she is too young to know what she is doing just that it hurts her like crazy and her poor cry that comes when she does it, but I didnt know if there was anything I could besides cutting her hair (which I refuse!! :-) I thought about letting her sleep w a beenie on but her head sweats too much when they are on her, so she never wears one. Any ideas? or just deal with it until she gets a little older? The hardest part is its right when she is about to fall asleep sometimes and as you can imagine that jolts her back awake. Thanks ladies ;-)

What can I do next?

If you don't want to swaddle her, I would recommend putting socks on her hands (like baby tube socks). They stay on better than the little mittens and are usually cheaper. It keeps their fingers warm andhelps them keep from scratching themselves. I've done that withboth my boys and it works great.

Cover her hands. They have little mittens for newborns.

They make little gloves for babies to wear, so that babies with long finger nails don't scratch themselves. I can only assume it would work in your situation as well. You can find them at Wal-mart. They are relatively cheap.

get some baby gloves or a shirt that has folds for gloves (most infant long sleeve shirts have those built in) and wrap her hands in them, when she goes to pull, she wont be able to grip her hair as easily

my baby does that too she's almost 4 months now and she's still wearing mittens so she could not pull her hair.. she has this habit of scratching her head too her scalp is clean... its a reflex they cant control their movements... this will get better as their fine motor skills develops...

She doesn't know what she's doing. She's just getting a grip on something and doesn't know how to really let go yet.
Many babies also scratch themselves.
Get some of those little things to put on her hands that keep her from being able to grab her hair. They make really cute ones.
They also make jammies with the little flaps at the end of the sleeves that can go over their hands.
No need to cut her hair.

Best wishes.

Her hair is going to fall out anyways, every seen newborns with huge bald patches on the backs of their head? It happens. For now, swaddle her or put on baby mittens, or a very light weight baby cap. It's really all you can do.

Have you tried swaddling her so that her hands aren't free? You can buy cool self swaddlers, that's what we did.
