Baby Wakes up So Cold!

Hi,

With the weather getting colder my daughter who is 4 months always wakes up with ice cold hands. She sleeps in those zip up sleepers so her whole body is warm just her little hands and sometimes her ears. My 2 year old takes after her father and is a sweat hog. She can have no blankets on and still be hot. I can't turn the heat on yet since it's in the 70's during the day but wondering if any one has unique ideas to help with this.

THANKS in advance for all the advice!!!!

What can I do next?

Try putting the little mits that keep babies from scratching their faces on her hands and see if that helps keep her hands warm. just a thought.. have a great day..Lori

We also had this problem....We like the house cold, but we have an 8 month old. We bought a space heater also and it works great. We used one when he slept in our room for his first month and hten put it into his room as well. it has a thermostat so when we check on him at night we can make it warmer or colder. He now wakes up with warm hands and feet.

You could also try putting an undershirt, short or long sleeved, as well as socks on her. That worked well also.

I had the same problem with my son when he was that age (he is not one) the cold hands and ears. Since I am first time mom I called the DR. and asked if it had something to do with his circulation haha can you believe I was that nervous. Anyways it wasnt and what I ended up doing was buy a small space heater from target and put it in his room. It has worked really well because it is also a fan so in the summer althought we have central air I kept the fan on and the noise is great for blocking out sounds and he loves it. Another nice thing about the space heater is that I can set it to reach a certain temp and then it will automatically turn off and back on when needed. It had worked out for us well. I hope this idea helps!

Here is a direct quote from my Baby 411 book. "The cooler the room, the better. SIDS occurs more frequently in the winter months when babies are bundled and the heat is on. Believe it or not, the recommended "safe" room temperature to reduce SIDS risk is 68 degrees."

I am not trying to scare you with this information but if the rest of her body is warm, I would not worry about her hands and ears being a little cold.

Now what I understand from that quote is if babies are too warm they are less easily aroused/awaken and don't move if something blanket, etc is close to their airway. Best to keep her a little alert and a little cooler AND SAFE.

Hope this helps.

L.,

They sell little mittens for new borns. I think they are intended for the baby not to scratch themselves but I found they kept my daughters hands nice and cozy at night.

I saw them everywhere from Babies R Us, to Target.

A hat will keep her ears warm, and also keep in a lot more body heat. Does she kick off blankets? I guess if she is really warm and it's just her hands I wouldn't worry about it too much, really. If SHE'S cold, then the hat, mittens/socks and/or blanket should help. You could also get one of those rice-filled warmers (you heat it in the microwave and it stays warm awhile), although that won't last the whole night.
Hope that helps!

what about getting a small electric heater and just turning it on when you go to sleep and shutting it off in the morning, i have two taht are fans as well and auto shut off if they tip over for any reason and i love them i have a very old home so it gets drafty. or you could look for those jammies you probally used right after yougot home from teh hospital that have the little flaps that fold over the ahnds to keep baby from scratching themselves. it would keep her hands warm, socks or little mittens would work too if you could keep them on her.

I put my 3 month old daughter in Carter brand night gowns that have a little flap on each sleeve that you fold over to cover the hands. I think I got them at Macy's.

TRY SOME MITTENS!!!!! my son was the same way when he was only a few months old but he has gotten a little better now that he is 18 months. THe mittens worked pretty good but wait until she is sound asleep to put them on or she will pull them off if shes figured that out yet. good luck and i hope this helps you out!

We use a space heater for our daughters room. That way we know she'll be warm without having to heat the whole house.

I had the same problem with my son. We bought a small inexpensive space heater and turned it on at night. They have some really nice ones that are totally kid proof (auto shut off if it tips over, or gets too hot). we just set it on the dresser and it didn't affect our electric bill noticeably either.
