So, my hubby and I are about to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary this Friday. We were planning on doing the whole..."jump in the car and drive till we stop in some quaint little town and stay at a bed and breakfast etc..." thing but then we had some other expenses that led us to decide to try and save some cash and stay close to home. We have now been pondering what else we can do for about a week now. I think our hearts were so set on doing something special that now the whole "dinner and a movie" thing seems so blah...especially for our 5th. Any suggestions?

Hi S.!
My husband and I have been married for 28 years. I know the expense of going all out for an anniversary. How about spending the day at a carnival like atmosphere. I don't mean an amusement park (too expensive), I mean like Geneva on the Lake or some small tourist area. You can walk hand in hand and just enjoy the wonderful sounds and scents that await you. If the area is close enough to home, go home for the night and save alot of money. These areas have all kinds of activities that aren't really expensive and you can keep your day in your budget. What ever you do, make sure that you enjoy each other. Have fun! C.

Congrats on your anniversary. My husband and I are celebrating ours in a few weeks. We are going to spend the day at Kalahari. It's $40 per person just for the day. Its something fun yet not too crazy expensive and we are going to spend time alone with no kids. Have fun no matter what you do.

How about going to a state park. Hocking hills is beutiful, so is Mohican. If you still wanted to stay the night you could look at renting a cabin at a park, you save money by being able to prepair your own food, and evening by a campfire can be very romantic.

When we were married 5 years, we hosted a party and invited everyone that was in our Wedding party. We had our wedding album out and had movies of the wedding playing. We didn't splurge that much and requested no gifts so it wasn't too costly, but everyone had a great time and they are still talking about it 43 years later. Since then, on our 10th we went to Hawaii and on every milestone after that we would plan a special trip once we were more financially stable. Whatever you plan, Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!

S.,
We had hopes of doing something really big and extravagant for our 5 year (it was in May), but since we had just had a baby and me not working the funds weren't there. So we went to downtown SB and ate at Trios. I don't know if you've ever been there but it's a great restaurant that has live music after 9. It's very classy cool. I recommend going somewhere where you would dress up a bit,(I wore a dress)I think it makes it feel even more special. Then we went to the SB Chocolate Factory and pigged out on their amazing pie. I liked that we didn't go to a movie, b/c what we did required us to talk and laugh the whole time which doesn't happen that often when you have a newborn and 3 yr. old in the house. Also, being downtown kindof gives you that Chicago feel, so it almost felt like we had traveled a bit. I'm sure you'll thinking of something fun. Congrats on 5 years!

Congratulations S.. My husband and I just celebrated our 5th also. We had our hearts set on the big celebration too, but because of finances couldn't do it. It is somewhat disappointing. Can you still do the bed and breakfast thing, just close by home? I wish I had a better plan for you, but we just did dinner and it turned out being really special because we haven't been out together in months! Have fun, no matter what you end up doing! Marriage is tough these days. So every anniversary is special, even 5th!
