5 Month Old Scratching Head

My son scratches his forehead in his sleep. I clip his nails almost every day, but he manages to do it anyway. I would try mittens while he's sleeping, but he sucks his fingers to self-soothe and go back to sleep, and he's old enough now I think he would take them off. The scratches aren't deep, and don't seem to bother him. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My son, born Aug. 7, is the same way. Mittens won't help either, they seem to love that if they spit there fingers out they don't go anywhere and they can put them back in. I have no great advice but just keep clipping his nails. Good luck and congrates!!!

Hi, My son who has ezcema would scratch a lot. We put the longer socks on his hands and then under his P.J.s and it worked better than mittens. He still eventually would pull them off but he did it less. Keep clipping the nails too. Good luck!

Hi R. :)
My neice had something similar going on. Based on this and the thing you posted earlier about cradle cap I think it's the same thing. I think if you can find some way to get good oils in his diet it will help his itchy, flaky skin. Omega oils or fish oils to be specific. Kind of a "heal it from the inside" approach. I know Valley Natural foods carries fish oils and probably has some kind of childrens version of it. Perhaps it could be mixed into a bottle or stirred into rice cereal? I'm nursing and take two capsules a day and my son's cradle cap is clearing up and his skin is nice and soft still. I hope that helps your little guy!

Have you tried having him wear a cap to bed? Just a thought...

try filing them. cutting them actually makes them sharper... however, dont file hard, and dont file a lot, just file any sharp edges off.
are you opposed to a pacifier? you could use that instead of having to worry about his sucking on his fingers, after all, you can take the pacifier away, but you cant take his fingers away! :D but its up to you! you are the mom! :D
good luck. its probably not too harmful, and he will probably stop doing it soon.
