5 Month Old (In 6 Days) Arches All the Time

She's been deemed perfect (not just perfectly healthy lol)by the doctor but she arches all the time, especially when we lay her down or try to feed her the bottle. Any ideas? My counselor I was seeing for PPD said her babies all did the same thing too.

What can I do next?

No worries, babies do this when they are tired, or have gas.
It's normal, and it's common.

Make sure you burp her in between while feeding.
If she does this when being put down to sleep/nap, it's okay... don't try to "stop" it... its just a natural body movement they do to unwind and get settled, and for some babies they do this to self-soothe. It's good, if this is what she needs to do to get settled in. Just let it happen.

When giving her the bottle, don't lie her down....keep her inclined or upright, or you holding her.

I would bet she has gastric reflux. My granddaughter had it severely from when she was 15 days old. They told me at Ped intensive care that the pain is like an adult heart attack. We did 3 things..she was on meds...we made sure she never laid down flat, and put a small amount of rice cereal in her bottle to keep it down. She was fine before she was a year old. But it was really frightening at 1st. I encourage you to talk to her doctor about it asap.
Good luck...C.

Hi,
My babies did it too, but it was acid reflux. Two of them still have it (one is 9, the other 5). I was told (with each of them) that the arching is one of the signals that they are experiencing gastric reflux. It happened especially when they were laid flat or when they were eating. There are other symptoms, too, which are more specific. It's a pretty straightforward problem to address and your doctor can tell you a lot more. I'd check it out if I were you, just because if it's reflux, it's such a painful thing for the child to endure. If it's just gas, no harm done, at least you'll know.

Good luck! :-)
