Cereal in Bottle??

I am a new mom to a 13 week old baby boy who suffers from a severe milk/soy allergy and reflux. He is currently taking 5 oz of formula, but spits up frequently, especially when burped (after every 2 0z) or after he is done feeding. The doctor recommended putting some rice cereal in his bottle during feedings. Does this really work? I have heard that it makes the formula stay down and it can make the baby fuller so he will sleep longer. Any experience with this?
Thanks! :)

I was in your same situation with my daughter (reflux, not necessarily the allergy) at 2 months. More than one doctor recommended cereal in the bottle and it does help. It did not make my daughter obese (a fear of mine). I was also told (several more months later) that warmer bottles are easier on their stomachs and such. You could try that as well. Just be aware that if you do add cereal to his bottle, you need to use tri-cut nipples or nipples meant for thicker liquids. If he feels better, he will be able to sleep longer. :) HTH

It helped my son at 1 month along with having him sleep elevated, and zantac. Reflux & spitting vanished at 10 months.

i have heard consensus that cereal in bottle is a no-no.and choking hazard. also will not make bay sleep longer. a 13 week old too young for rice cereal anyway. talk to more folks about this. baby will likely outgrow reflux issue.

My daughter, now 7, was very gassy and tended to spit up often. I had her on Nutrigamen formula made for sensitive stomachs & put 1 tsp. of rice cereal/oz. For the first 4 months she slept in a swing or bouncy seat because I was told to keep her elevated for 1/2 hr. after feeding. I bought a foam wedge for under her mattress or a firm big pillow. At night I put gas drops in her bottle to help prevent the gas before it started. My nephew had reflux & the peditrician prescribed something like prilosec for him. It depends on how severe his case is. I hope one of these ideas work for you. Babies are all different and sometimes it is just trial & error. Good Luck!

I would not do the rice thing. Baby is too young. My son had gastric reflux and was prescribed medication to be given 30 minutes before each bottle. It really helped keep his formula down.

There's no reason why you can't put a little rice cereal in the bottle. Depending on the individual, many doctor's will recommend beginning feeding rice cereal to infants as young as 3 months. (although I don't agree, I know a 5 week old who has rice added to the bottle)

It's certainly worth a try. I'd rather try rice cereal than some type of medication.

I have a cousin who had the same problem with her son. It didn't stop the reflux but it definitely helped.
