4Mo Fussy in Evenings... Teething?

My formerly super-happy baby has become increasingly cranky in the evenings. We took him to the doctor, who confirmed that he is ok (no ear infections, etc.), and has begun teething.

My question is, why is he pretty much fine all day and only grumpy in the evening? If its teething, wouldnt you think it'd hurt him all day? This is my first child, so I've never dealt with a teething baby before, so maybe this is normal? Anyone else's babies do this?

What can I do next?

Teething seems to bother babies more in the evening. Did you ever notice that when you are sick with a cold or something it always seems worse in the evening? Good luck with your little guy.

when ever a child is in pain for some reason they hurt more at night. All three of my kids when they don't feel good will be fine all day and at night it is a totally different game. tylenol will work and give him something to chew on try a wet textured warm wash cloth if he was a little older i would say a frozen waffle. it will pass after his first couple of teeth.

Try white noise and see if that works. My son was like that except he was screaming for hours. But he was a little younger than that I think. White noise like the vacuum worked to calm him down. If it's teething the white noise probably won't work. Some babies just get a fussy time in the evening and I don't think doctors know why. I've heard that they are overstimulated during the day and it finally wears on them by the evening. White noise is relaxing to them. Try it..it can't hurt.

Hi, tylenol didn't seem to work with my son--but infant motrin did the trick and lasts 8 hrs--and it definitely sounds like teething

My son is 8 mo. old and started teething around 4 mo. He would be fine most of the day, but wake up SO cranky after nap (around 3ish). Luckily he was not too bothered by it while sleeping. My ped recommended Tylenol when he wakes up from nap and again at bedtime (if needed). That didn't work everyday, but most days it seemed to take the edge off so he was happy and could play. We also really liked the mesh baggies with a handle. I put ice cubes or pieces of no sugar ice pops in it. Just beware, they're really messy! Good luck!

All 3 of my boys have done this same thing. Two things worked for me. First, if you're able, take him outside. Outside seems to be the end-all, be-all cure for whatever ails little ones :-) Second, with my current son, I started putting him in a backpack while I made dinner and had the "evening rush". He loved watching me make dinner, I'd chatter to him while I did it and he loved being close to me.

I doubt it's a teething issue when it's just an evening fussy thing. Many books talk about this 'phenomenon' and I think it has a lot to do with everyone coming home at the end of the day, the rush to get dinner, dishes, etc. done and so forth. Hold him, walk with him, take him outside and I think you'll see a stop to it.

I know this is alittle off from you're question but try putting him down to bed earlier. My son did that twice in a row and I put him down early and he was good to go...
Hope this works!!

My 4 month old has started doing the same thing (grumpiness in the evening). I was at the doctor on Monday, but he said he didn't see any sign of teeth yet. Sorry I can't help you, but I thought it was weird that someone else is going through this too.
