My sister in law turns 40 next month. She lives many miles away, but is really sweet. She has two young children and they just moved several hours away from their hometown due to a new job position. She is really sad about leaving her friends and family friendly neighborhood behind. I'd like to send her something for her 40th, but don't know what. I know she isn't thrilled about turning 40 (as I won't be either in a few years!) so no gag gifts or anything and something that can be easily mailed! Any ideas???

What can I do next?

You could play nicely on the 40th theme, with sending her 40 flowers, or 40 of her fav candy or chocolate. Or make a jar of 40 memeories of her or things you love about her.

Photo books can be really fun. and a touching gift.

Drive there and babysit so she can go have a spa day.

If her friends live only a few hours drive away organize a group of them to visit her within a day of her birthday. You join them. She'll never forget the gift you all gave her.
The 40's are the best part of your life. You still have your looks, your physical strength, stamina and more sense than you've ever had. You develop your full career potential and moreover you have a kind of self confidence which comes with full maturity.
They are truly the best years of your life. Embrace them.

Maybe find out something about her new town that she would enjoy and purchase a gift-certificate or membership (zoo, activities, salons, unique dinning?). I haven't seen the entertainment (coupon) books lately, but I bet they are still out there- and they are tailored for each town.
Or is there something that will help her stay connected with the friends and family, like a video camera for her computer? I am really out of touch with today's technology, so there might be something more current.
Or a digital picture frame.

Think of something she really loves to do but does not get to do often; then surprise her with that. It could be a good book, painting, exercise related. Send her something that makes her feel loved and young!

If you can get your hands on (or emailed) some pictures of her with friends and family (you can also download pictures from Facebook too)... I would get a digital photo frame and upload those pictures on it. Maybe send with a small bouquet of flowers :)

Gift Card to Bath and Body Works, Olive Garden, Bed Bath and Beyond...
Movie tickets
CD of her favorite music
DVD of her favorite movie/new movie that she would like to see
New Purse and Wallet (Kohls has some great purses there)

Actually Kohls has a bunch of great stuff in their store. Do you have a Kohls where you're at? You could always go to their website if you don't. www.Kohls.com

If she likes to read, you can get her a great Novel of her favorite type of book, ie: Mystery, Romance...etc.

Hope this helps ya. It's really hard to move away from everything and everyone you know. Hope she has a happy birthday! :-)

Can you get the email addresses of her family and friends from her husband and then send out a reminder that she is turning 40 and would love to get a card or email. Gently remind them that she isn't thrilled about the age.

I would list 40 things that you love about her and send that. It's not about things at this point in her life. I love the idea of you showing up to babysit so she can go pamper herself.

I think it would be super nice if you send her a cake, there are many websites like 1-800 flowers that send flowers and cakes, but my favorite cake by far is a lemon cake from blackhoundny.com.

In this days you can buy her any kind of gift, from flowers, cakes to clothes and be sent as a gift from almost any store. If she likes cooking send her a little something from Williams Sonoma, there are all price range gifts and they package it beautifully.

Good luck!
