Good afternoon Ya'll...I'm 45, fixin' to turn 46. We have two grown daughters, whom are 20 and 18, and moving off to college in the next month. My husband and I had been trying to have another baby, so no birth control has been needed for 13 years now. The brief fertility treatments were unsuccessful, but we are at a point now where we don't want to take any chances just in case, even though chances are slim. So, my question is...what options do I have at 46? I did take birth control pills in my 20's and in between having my girls, but that's been such a long time ago. My ob/gyn did give me an RX for Femcon, a chewable bc pill, but I have not taken it yet. With not having taken birth control pills in 13 years, I'm unsure and leary of how it will affect me and how my body will respond, but the alternative of having another little one at my age is the deciding factor. We would basically be starting over at a much older age, and I don't think we could survive raising teenagers again..LOL...Has anyone heard of this pill or is anyone currently taking it? Also, any other feedback would be appreciated as I really want to get started on this as soon as I can. Thanks in advance..God Bless!

Several people I know have the IUD. It's something that a doctor inserts into the uterus and it lasts for 5 years. Most people have a 1-3 day cycle of spotting per month and that's it. I had my tubes tied, but if not this is the way I would go.

Is vasectomy out of the question? We are tryin' for number two...but have agreed to the ol' "snip-snip", if it is not in the cards for us. Your husband would be in and out, in a relatively short period of time, and almost no recovery.
Problem solved.
Then again, my husband knows that he could either take a few days out of his life for a little inconvenience...or...I could have years of inconvenience.
It depends on the man.

My DH just got the big "V". It was nice and simple and I only had to listen to the whining for a couple of days. He complained until I reminded him of the 9 months of pregnancy + 16 hours of labor and 6 weeks of recovery. He stopped complaining after that. The man's health risks are usually much lower then the woman's. I would have him look into this. Any non-invasive BC you choose will be for decades to come. His would be quick, less invasive and relativly painless. You gave him 2 children. This is the least he could do for you.
Well, I haven't heard of this pill. But I can vouch for the depo provera injection. It's given every 3 months and it's pretty effective. I've used it on and off for 10 years now. In between having 4 kids, it's what I've come back to. It does increase your chances of weight gain, but it makes your periods lighter and in some women it stops your period all together. It takes a while (a few months) for it to get out of your system; if your trying to get pregnant again... But it's something that's worked for me.

I am 44 and soon to be 45. My daughter is 19 so I can relate that a pregnancy now would be starting all over again. When I turned 40, I stopped taking the pill. (I took it for 20+ years).
My husband talked to a urologist about a vasectomy, but the term the doctor used was "you know that you will be sterile after this procedure". Needless to say...he freaked out. Plus the Dr. gave us some literature about the entire procedure and that made my hubby tuck his tail and run!!!
Anyway, we have been using condoms for 5 years now.
I didn't want to be on any type of "hormone" anymore because my OB/Gyn said that I would NOT go through menopause as long as I have this in my system.
It is a personal choice, but if your husband is against a vasectomy and you want your body to do what it is getting ready to do, condoms are the natural and safest way to prevent pregnancy. I know there are all these new methods, but I'm not willing to be the guinea pig. Can any OB/Gyn honestly say that there aren't any side effects or how accurate these new methods are??I think not!! I don't like to take any extra pills so we used the calendar method - this can work if your cycles are regular. You only have to abstain about 2-3 days and it is pretty reliable if you are able to avoid sex for a few days a month. No drugs, no expense, and nothing much to keep up with other than your periods (which may not be for everyone). You can look it up on the internet to see how it works (natural family planning). If your periods are not regular, it may not be the choice unless you are willing to accept the small chance of an "accident," which it sounds like you may not be.

I can't take the pill. freaks my system out. I was using the Today's sponge, but it isn't that effective and you have to insert prior to and remove afterwards. Then I found ou about CVF. It doesn't cost as much and is basically a spermicidal gel that is shapes into a sheet or 2"X2" film. You insert within 3 hours prior to and you don't have to remove anything. It melts with your body heat and kinda lubricates things, but not so much that it gets messy. I really like it and it is more effective than the sponge. Hope this helps you. It is non hormonal, but it can irritate things if you are sensitive to the monoxidol 9 stuff.
Ask your doc for the Nuvaring. It is a super low dose of hormone inserted in a ring form once per month into the vagina. It works directly on the ovaries thus lessing the amount getting into the blood stream. No horrible side effects, and less danger to older ladies. I am 30 and doc recommended it to me because of slightly elevated blood pressure. Said it is not so bad for you. I really like it so far!
