3 Years Old Told Small Intestines Rotated, Ever Hear of That?

My son recently had tests done and we found out something they just happened to notice. His small intestines are rotated and I'm totally freaking. 3 groups of doctors are consulting and then they will contact me. Has anyone ever heard of this. I was just advised at any time if he's screaming and vomiting rush him to the hospital and they will perform surgery because it means they twisted. If anyone has ever encountered this I would love to hear from you because right now I'm so scared and worried and uncertain what will happen now. Thanks

What can I do next?

I have heard of it but I have not personally known anyone with it.

Here's an article about it:
http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/digestive/malrotatio...#

And another...

Sounds like the important thing is that you're now aware of it and it can be addresses as soon as possible, before an emergency situation.
All the best!

I Googled it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intestinal_malrotation

Intestines usually develop in the abdomen in a certain way with certain features in regular places.
With intestinal malrotation, the intestines are in a less regular position.
I imagine the 3 groups of doctors are determining what degree of the condition your son has.
It's a problem if it twists and the bowels become obstructed (those are the symptoms they are telling you to look for).
Even if obstruction does not happen on it's own, the Dr's will decide if it's bad enough to warrant surgery to move his intestines to where they are usually located (and they'll usually do an appendectomy at the same time while they are in there).
Don't panic!
This is a fixable problem and I think your son will be fine.
It's a good thing they found it now before there is an emergency, and it's good you know the symptoms of an emergency (and will be able to tell medical personal about it if you need to).
Stay in close contact with the doctors and keep asking them questions till they explain things to your satisfaction.
Knowledge is power and understanding will help you feel not helpless.
Hang in there!
I really think it will be alright!

Additional:
The Rotovirus vaccine does not cause intestinal malrotation.
Malrotation is a congenital birth defect (develops before child is born).
Within 1 week of first taking the vaccine (typically given at 2 months) there's a less than %1 chance of developing intussusception which is a completely different condition.

I have never heard of this, but want to wish your son well. I will keep him in my prayers. Try to breathe deeply and keep yourself calm so you can be there for him. I'm sorry you are going through this!

Fortunately, intestinal positioning defects seems to be easy enough to correct. My youngest had intusussception (and I know I spelled it wrong...it's about the hardest word to spell in our language.) which is a piece of the intestine folding in on itself. Fortunately, it self-corrected before surgery was necessary.

I have heard of a LOT of instances of something like this or similar to it, and all were resolved with no problems. Take a breath. Sorry you're going through it, though...I know how scary it can be.

A extended family member, through my best friend went through this with their kiddo.

She ended up have multiple surgeries to get things working right.

Her's was extremely bad though.

Take it one day at a time. That is all you can do. Make sure he is comfortable.

Educate yourself on all the possibilities. That is your best way to stay on top of this type of stuff!!

My son had an intessesception issue when he was under one year old. He went to bed fine and woke up crying to which nothing would comfort him be it the nuk, bottle, or holding. His temp was very low and we decided to rush to ER. Took some time but after projectile vomitting it was determined this was the problem. Did x-rays, procedure to try to fix but didn't work. He had surgery with a week recovery and no issues since. We were told 15% change it could reoccur but thankfully no issues yet. Be greatful this was found and can be watching for the symptoms in our case I had no idea just had that gut feeling with many signs that made us go in thankfully other wise may have been a very hard situation. Best of Luck !

I saw this on an episode of ER or some type of medical drama. It does happen more than I thought. I would research around to make sure you find a hospital or medical team that has a lot of experience dealing with this. Hang in there and remain informed!

If it's basically the same as bloat, where the stomach can get twisted either at one or both ends, it's scary but treatable if caught in time. Not only people suffer this, but horses and dogs too. I did lose a dog to it, but luckily my horse was not quite there. My other dog I caught it in time, the vet was sceptical about doing anything, but I insisted. If NOTHING is done of course the dog won't survive. He did operate, dog was fine afterwards. Lived a normal life span. It might be easier to detect with dogs, tho.

Keep calm. That's all I can say. If the doctors are on it, then it sounds like this will resolve itself one way or another. Positively. It may require the surgery just to 'untwist' it. And things can move through in the natural way.
Try not to worry, okay. It isn't fun to go through, by any means, but you're all on top of it!
Good luck!

Yes I have not in a human though i heard about it in an animal and unfortunately they didn't know about it till the dog was too sick and died two days later ( Im sorry I don't mean to upset you) I do know of someone who had an intestined issue to and they where able to remove most of the small intestine and she is ok now. SO wait for the dr.'s to call and go for that even though I know your worried you have to breath and try to relax and stay calm cuz kids can detect n you don't want the little one to start asking tons of questions. Just wait and see I am sorry if i freaked you out Im an honest person i tell what i know to the truth sorry!!! I don't beat around bushes. Have a great christmas!!!

Has he had the Rotovirus vaccine? This is one of the complications of that vaccine. They had taken it off the market because it was killing children due to this complication, but they have brought it back, basically unchanged. Hopefully, they know how to repair this better now. I pray that with good, early medical intervention that he will be healed and fine. Please update us when you have an update.
