I am concerned about my 3 yo son. He has been potty trained now for about a year but recently over the past 2 days he has been wetting hmself. This is not only while he is sleeping but during play also. He says that "it just comes out". He is going to the bathroom as usual but it seems that even though he has been using the bathroom as usual he is still wetting himself at least 2 to 3 times a day not including night time. Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all the good advice on here I didn't freak out and take my son to the doctor's like originally planned. I have since found that my son is probably very stressedout. He lives a very strict and simple life with me and my mother only to find out that on the rare occassions that he visits dad he is taught that disrespecting females especially is second nature. He has now told me that "daddy tells me to say fu@$!n B!____@____.com to his girlfriend." I have now cut all unsupervised visits with daddy! Thanks to all you wonderful moms!!!

T.,
My son had a bit of "back-sliding" after he was potty trained. I think it's just a phase & it'll pass. I wouldn't make a big deal out of it or you may make him paranoid! Hang in there.

Sometimes children who are potty trained will have accidents here or there. But also at times when children have been potty trained for a while then began having accidents it may be because something else going on. Is everything as it should be with the sitter or day care? Are the people around your son treated him well? Is he stressed out about something? Ask your Pediatrician for advice. Good Luck.

I've heard that people can have wetting accidents if their back is out of wack! I know it sounds far fatched but a friend of mines kid started having accidents during the day and night. She took him to the chiropractor and had his back adjusted and it fixed the problem. It's a suggustion. Hope it helps.

At age three, it's not unusual for accidents to occur now and again. I would call the doc's office though and let them know. It's possible he may have an infection and may need to be seen.

This is from my own (painful) experience, but when I was about 3 1/2 years old, I remember a day when I was outside playing with the "big kids" and having SO much fun. I recall needing to go pee, but I wanted to wait b/c I was afraid if I left the fun, they'd take off and I wouldn't be able to play with them anymore. The fear of missing out made me delay going to the bathroom for so long that I wound up having an accident. My mom... well, she was far less than understanding. She felt the need to "shame" me for the accident and I didn't have the ability to verbalize the why of my accident, all I could do was cry. So, she said if I was going to wet my pants like a baby, I'd have to wear diapers like a baby. Don't ask me where she got ahold of diapers large enough to fit me (maybe I'd only recently been potty trained?), but she wouldn't even allow me to put on clothes - I had to wear nothing but the diaper. Of course, without clothes on, I wasn't about to go back outside, so I didn't get to play with the big kids anymore anyway. I have full recall on the sensation of being humiliated and embarassed. I even remember my step-dad walking in the door and saying, "What are you doing inside? You should be outside playing with the kids!" and me just bawling my head off and trying to curl up deeper into the couch.

So, remember, age 3 and potty trained is good. I'd say all little kids have accidents from time to time and the worst thing you could do is make him feel ashamed of himself. Offer him empathy and understanding, let him know accidents happen (because they do!) and that he's still a big boy!
