Hi, My second child (a boy) was put on Zantac at 8 weeks. It worked very well for a week then the symptoms came back and he was uncomfortable. The dr. increased the dose and it worked well for 2 1/2 weeks and then he was becoming fussy again and never able to do back or belly time. Then dr. put him on Prilosec. It seems to be working somewhat but not as well as the good days on the other medicine. Still fussy a lot of the time after feeding. Not as unhappy spitting up now as back at the beginning at 8 weeks (then he was screaming in pain and was so uncomfortable so anything is better than that.) The poor guy! Still not too successful getting him to do back or belly time or any play time. Anyone experienced similar things? Any suggestions? We have a message in to the dr. for other suggestions like: changing formula to soy based or seeing a gi specialist? He is now 3 months and we are concerned about him. He has been gaining weight well. We don't expect a perfect baby but he is so unhappy most of the time and has to be held constantly.

What can I do next?

I would seek knowledge from a specialist. My son had a similar issue, the meds never worked and the formula changes didn't either. He is now almost 4 and complete ok but looking back at that time in his life I should of questioned things and asked for a second opinion quicker instead of making so many different changes and putting those chemicals into his body that helped nothing. Just my opinion but we had a great Pediatric GI Doc who really helped us.

Have you considered introducing infant probiotics? You can find them at any health food store (make sure it's in the refrigerated section). Medications are just going to mask the problem, not necessarily fix it. Best of luck to you!

I know someone else mentioned a GI doctor. I have a 4 month old that has acid reflux and we are going to see a GI to see if we are giving her the right meds. My friend suggested it to me b/c of going through it with her 2 kids and said it was a great thing. If these things aren't treated young, they can cause further problems down the line, which is what happened to my friends kids. Bring it up to your doctor. I know I had to bring it up to mine and they were open to it. Good luck!

I had a colicy baby with acid reflux :0( We tried a bunch of different formulas and ended up on alimentum.. Unfortunately it's expensive BUT if you have pretty good insurance they will reimburse you for it... My son went to a gastroenterologist and we got a note from him saying he had to be on it, submitted it to my insurance company along with all receipts from purchasing it and got reimbursed.. So it worked out great....
My son was on BOTH zantac and ummmmm maybe it was prilosec (hard to remember because it was 3 years ago) at the same time (the combination worked well for my son).. Good luck... I understand the hard times your going through!!!!

My daughter was on Prevacid, alimintim formula, and rice in her bottles. These helped and she grew out of it by about 6 months. Have the test done where they look and see how bad their refluxing. It will help for a better diagnosis. I think the gast. doctor performs them. It's harmless you just have the baby eat certain amounts for formula and monitor to see how much their refluxing. Also make sure your burping very often. That helped my daughter as well. Good luck! You don't want to let the problem go unresloved the refluxing can burn their throat. It makes me crazy to see all the meds they throw at infants. It's not solving the problem, only treating the symptoms, and obviously not too well. The only people I know who have solved this problem have ADDED to the baby's diet with an infant-safe supplement (formulated by the same food scientist who helped develop ProSoBee and Enfamil formulas) and world-renowned in nutrition. He's on the board of the Council for Responsible Nutrition and is now part of the International arm of that body. Premature infants are getting this product thru feeding tubes, and it's completely safe. If you want my help, I will happily give you more info. The product is great and the customer care & support is outstanding.

Sounds like a problem with the formula. Soy is also problematic, I would stay away from soy and dairy. Also supplementing with baby probiotics is essential(find this at whole foods). Find a formula for sensitive babies. Try homeopathy and gripe water for the symptoms, but remember it won't get better until you get to the root of the problem.

Go to a Naturopathic doctor!!!! Google one in your area. He will give you something "all Natural" that will help him and not have the side effects associated with what the doctor is giving him. Or....do the research yourself for all natural remedies. Aloe vera jell (get at whole foods) can work wonderful too. I'd still check with the Naturopathic doctor. Your son is very young. The prescription ant-acids can cause more harm than good...but his doctor will not tell you that.
Good Luck,
S.

My 6mo little guy had the same thing. Also put on Zantac. I tried Soy it didn't help and he had a reacation to it in his diaper. Not sure if you have tried this but I didn't like the idea of alwys giving him the Zantac. So I started him on baby cereal sooner then recommended buy doctor and it helped. I did about 1tablspn with mixed with some formula and instantly noticed a change. Almost like the heaviness of it helped calm the reflux. I also put a pillow under one side of his crib to keep him elevated. that helped with the spit ups at night/nap.

When my son was 8 weeks we had a skin test done because he cried ALL the time. He also spit up a ton but all three of my kids did and since they gained weight and didn't seemed bothered by it I never worried about it. Well the skin test revealed that he had a minor dairy intolerance so I went off all dairy (I was breast feeding) and within days he stopped screaming. I didn't allow him to have dairy until he was one and then I slowly introduced it. He is now 3 1/2 and can have dairy without any problems. Be careful with soy as well. I wish you the best. It is so hard to listen to your baby screaming and in pain and feel like there is nothing you can do about it. I hope you find something that helps!

I feel for you! My 5 month old son and now 4 year old daughter went through and currently have the same problem. Our doctor and my husband's father (he is a General Practitioner) both strongly advised with both our children not to put them on any antacids unless it got desperate (meaning they were malnutritioned and not thriving). We were told that their digetive tracts are so small and sensitive and underdeveloped that inroducing something as strong as an antacid could really harm them and throw off the development of the gi tract and could potentially harm other aspects of their growth prermanently because so little research has been on the long term side effects of such strong medicine on such a little baby.

We ran the gamut of formulas and bottles for both my daughter and son and ended up sticking with what we started with; regular milk based Enfamil (the generic) and the Playtex Ventair Classic bottle.

We do put rice cereal in the bottle and that does help to keep the formula down and starting solid foods has made it better. My daughter literally overgrew hers overnight once she turned about 9 months old and we are hoping the same goes for our son.

It is inconvenient and messy to have the CONSTANT throw up and what bothered me the most was the discomfort it caused them for the first 3 months of their life. It no longer seemed to HURT them after about 4 months. The problem will correct itself naturally and we need to remember that sometimes just because a drug is available does not mean it is appropriate or safe:) Best of luck to you and know that as long as you are there for him and he is growing and smiling he will be okay!
