3-Yr. Old Son Having Problems Streaking His Pants

My 3-year old son, was potty-trained 2 months ago. For the past several weeks he has been having problems streaking his pants with poop. This happens about 2-4 times on a daily basis. Rarely does he ever do a full load in his pants, but several times a day he has what I come to call "poo-poo farts". I have worked with him like I did when I tiolet-trained him and after accidents explain that it isn't good to poop his pants and have him clean himself up and his pants and then do 3-10 practices where he practices "going potty" from different places in the house. So far I have not seen much improvement and am wondering if there is something more going on that I don't understand. Some good advice would be much appreciated.

Does he have constipation issues? My son does this but it is because he is constipated and I was told this is loose stool that seeps out around the hard stuff....we have had issues with this for years and my son is 5 1/2 and we are trying to get it corrected before he starts school in the fall.

Sounds like he just needs more time. You are pushing him way too hard and this will cause more problems in the long run. Don't put so much pressure on him, and he will gain control of the situation in his own time.

One of my boys had this problem when he had too much fiber in his diet- he would refer to them as "wet toots". I had to be extra careful about the amount of fruit- especially citrus fruits. Is this a possibility? Be careful not to put too much pressure on him- especially just a couple months after being potty trained. He may not be able to help it at all.

In adults, this problem is called fecal incontinence, and is not considered to be the fault of the sufferer. It can be caused by certain bowel problems and/or medications.

I very occasionally have the problem myself, and it always comes as a surprise - not because I'm too busy or lazy to get to the bathroom. One doctor told me my problem is probably the result of physical damage to my pelvic floor from a forceps delivery, but I have known a couple of other men and women who have mentioned the problem who haven't had forceps deliveries. Oh, we seniors have such interesting conversations. ;-)

Please don't assume it's the result of willful or neglectful behavior by your son. It could be, but probably isn't. Do bring it up with a pediatrician, and soon, if it's a frequent problem.

Could it be left over stool from the previous B.M.? I have all girls, so wiping is easy. But as a preschool teacher, there are times when I have to wipe or help wipe little boys. Having not much experience, I was unsure how to wipe down there. Because I was afraid I might hurt their 'stuff', I sometimes wondered if I wiped them well enough. Or, if they wipe themselves, are they doing a good job?

I unfortunately don't have much advice on this issue, since my son has a similar issue many days. I think his issue has to do with not wanting to stop playing long enought to go sit on the potty to have a BM. Also, he is 5 and so we are trying to let go and let him wipe himself, so there are some problems with this as well since he doesn't seem to wipe well enough. I just suggest to continue the gentle coaching and try to pay attention to times when he may be having gas and have him go sit on the potty when he is having gas since this is an indication that he has to go. I wish you patience and good luck! :)
