Hello,

I was wondering is it normal that my son (who is 2.5 yrs old)is snoring. He just got over a cold/congestion but the snoring is pretty loud (it woke me up yesterday). I think it is kind of funny/cute but I don't know if I should call his pediatrician on it. I have tried proping him on pillows and that does not seem to help.

Hi, I agree with all these... usually tonsils and adnoids, and drs will remove them if they feel they are large enough to interfere with sleep. Some may recommend a sleep study first, which isn't a half-bad idea, but most will send you straight to the ENT. See if it improves once all the cold symptoms are gone, and then decide if you think it could be causing him to not get a good nights sleep.

My 8 y.o. daughter had an adenotonsilectomy done 2 years ago. She used to snore so loudly that she would wake everyone up, including herself. She also would stop breathing at times. I talked to the pediatrician about it and they said she did not meet the criteria to see an ENT; strep 5x in a year, multiple sore throats, etc. But I knew her snoring was not ok so I took her to see an ENT anyways. Explained my concerns to him. One look down her throat and instantly he said she needed to have them both removed. Her adenoids were large. The peds. dr. never once told me that. If his snoring concerns you and it interrupts his sleep take him to the pediatrican first. If you are still not satisfied then take him to an ENT. There is no harm in asking. Trust your instincts.

My daughter also started snoring at around this age. She is almost 8 years old now and still snores except for summer months. She has tested positive for allergies to mold, wheat, milk and a number of other things. We still haven't been able to find a cure. Have your son tested for IGg allergies as well as the skin, RAST tests. I know of one Dr. that does the Igg test, Dr. Koles. Her website is http://www.u-ok.net/

My son snored from the day I brought him home home from the hospital. It only got louder as he got older. His ENT said he was probably born with enlarged adenoids that just got worse with time. After several bouts of strep throat and constantly enlarged tonsils (even when he wasn't sick) he had his tonsils and adenoids removed when he was 5. It made such a huge difference! He slept much better and his behavior improved greatly. I think because he wasn't sleep deprived. Good luck.

My son's tonsils ballooned up to the point he could almost chew on them. He didn't have any fever, but it looked like he had 2 huge marbles at the back of his mouth. We took him to and ENT and tried to shrink them with a steroid series and it did, but as soon as we finished up, they blew right back up again. We had his tonsils and adenoids out as soon as he turned 4, He stopped snoring and slept so much better. He no longer had trouble eating and swallowing, and he hardly ever got sick after they were out. It was totally worth it.

If he just got over the cold, I would wait just a bit to see if any improvements. If it appears the snoring is interrupting his sleep, definitely have him checked. My daughter started snoring at 3 1/2. At first, I thought nothing of it but then I noticed that she would stop breathing for just a few seconds. She was having episodes of sleep apnea as well and would stop breathing for a few seconds. She was not getting enough sleep. It turned out her tonsils were so large they were almost touching. The ENT told me that she could grow into them but since she was having sleep apnea issues, we should have them removed. They also removed her adnoids. No snoring since. It never hurst just ot check things out.

One of my daycare children had very bad snoring issues. When whe was around 4, they took out her adenoids. I've also noticed personally, the kids that come through my daycare that suck their thumbs, are more likely to snore. It might be a concidence, but, in my mind there's something about it.
