20 Month Old with Bath Time Issues

I have a 20 month old sweet little boy. He loves playing in his bath tub, but when it comes time to wash and rinse his hair he screams. He yells "no" and tries desperately to get out of the tub. I've tried washing his hair first thinking that maybe we could get that over with so he could enjoy playing the rest of the time, but he just screamed so much I ended up getting him right out of the bath. I've tried getting him to "look at the ceiling" so the water doesn't get in his eyes and ears. I've tried letting him rinse his own hair and I've tried using the shower head. Nothing works! Is this just a phase he's going through that I just need to deal with until its over, or does someone have some suggestions that might help?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
If you've tried everything, you may have tried this too, but... my (now) 23 month old went through a similar phase and I would soap up his head quickly and then have him lay down in the tub on his back. I used a wash cloth (a nemo one that he likes)to gently rinse out his hair- no direct dumping of water. To him it just felt like I was gently massaging his head with the wash rag. He was more afraid of the water than the washing, so this did the trick.
Good luck!

Try a shower. My boys would love the time with their dad or with me.
Good Luck.

Hi there! My son did the very exact same thing! What helped me was a special cup made just for bath time. You can get it at Wal-Mart in the infant bath section. It's like a small bucket with a handle and the front is made of a soft rubber material. The front conforms to your child's forehead and ensures he doesn't get any water in his eyes! It was a life saver for me! It took a little while for my son to actually figure out that the cup wasn't the bad guy, but when he did it was 100% easier. As for body washing, go out and let him pick out his own puff or bath mitten! My son has a Thomas Choo Choo one and it's the only thing he'll use! Good luck! I feel your frustration, believe me! LOL!

My 5 year old and 20 month old both never liked taking baths. Shower is no problem.!! My 5 year old does love the bathtub now but prefers the shower. We also take a plastic chair in the shower so they can sit down because they do get slippery and hard to hold.
Good Luck

My son went thru that phase as well, I just tell him to lay on his tummy and tip his head back and I put my left hand over the top of his forehead and make a cup and pour the water and as I'm pouring I push the water to the back of his head. You can go on this website.
