My 3 year old son has to go under every six months for an MRI. He has a lesion in his brain they are watching, no symptoms though. I am stressed out every time! So far he has done well each time although he is very cranky afterwards.

hi susie, my 7 year old is going in on thurs also, having a cholesteatoma removed, and i feel like throwing up and im crying all the time, i cant sleep. its awful, i know. he did it when he was 3 also for a hernia. everything was fine, it was much harder on us than on him. the only help i can give you is to warn you that if you are there with him as they put him under, it can be very upsetting. i dont want to scare you at all, but i wasnt ready for it and it really threw me, he just looked so little, and i had a really hard time keeping my composure, which is the most important thing you can do for him, he looks to you to tell him how to feel. i was very thankful for the mask they put on me. i think i will do much better this time because i know what to expect, which is why im telling you. i will also tell you that they bounce back remarkably quick, they are amazing. the hardest part is getting them to relax and recover. the only thing that helps me a little bit is to keep perspective. i know friends who have and are going through such horrible things with their kids, and i know that it could be so much worse, i have to be thankful that this is all he has and that it is fixable. our babies will be ok, try to keep the faith and show him a happy face. (((hugs)))

In January my then 3 year old son had to under go anesthesia. He was having foot surgery. I was a total mess every time I thought about it. But, suprisingly when the day came, I was very calm and strong. I guess I felt I had to be for him. The anesthesiologist gave my son something to relax him, and then they took him to surgery. I was not in the room when they actually put him under(which was a good thing ;) The only problem was when he came to, he had an upset tummy, vomiting. I know how you feel, and how scary it is. But, you will be fine, so that you can be his rock!!! Good luck. I will say a prayer for you both.

When my daughter had just turned 3, she went in for dental work as well. They put the little ones under anesthesia to make it less tramatic for them. They let me sit there with her until the anesthesia started to work (before they put wheeled her back and put the mask on.) I thought I was fine until it kicked in and she started going in and out. (Acting loopy, like anesthesia does.) My butterflies started kicking in and when they wheeled her back, my eyes started tearing up. That's when my worries when into overdrive. But she came out and was just fine when she woke up. A little groggy for the rest of the day and sore, but by the next day, she was up and running around like a normal child. I just wish I could bounce back from stuff the way she does! :~)

Good luck! I'm sure he'll do great and everything will be just fine. Just say a little prayer! :~)

Everything will be fine. For your comfort and your sons, they may let him take a favorite toy or blanket. My daughter was 6 when she had a tooth capped and root canal, they put her under and just 2 weeks before she was put under for tonsils and adnoids.

Super scary, I know. Our 10-month old went under anesthesia for ear tubes in December. Stay strong, don't let him see your fear. It can be a little scary (for them) as they wake up, thank goodness we were still nursing, I just popped him on the boob. If you aren't nursing, bring his favorite lovey and be there when he wakes up. Try not to dwell (easier said than done, I know). Everything should be just fine.

Go to your local health food store and pick up a bottle of Rescue Remedy.
It is fantastic for calming the nerves, anxiety and such.
I used it during a panic attack and it worked very very well.

I'm sorry. I feel for you. When my daughter was 15 mos. old, she had to have her tear ducts "opened" surgically. I'm fine with stitches, bad scrapes, bleeding, all the things that come with having small kids (and big kids for that matter), but I really surprised myself by being soooooo nervous for the anesthesia!! I almost cancelled the procedure. When we took her in, the hardest part for her was not eating. I kid you not, by the time we said goodbye, I took a couple deep breaths, went to the vending machine to get a snack (since I didn't want to eat in front of her) and got back, the nurse was there telling me she was headed to the recovery room!!! I kept trying to tell myself that these medical professionals do this many, many, many times over during the span of a week. They are good at what they do and kids are super resilient. Keep breathing deeply, self-calm by telling yourself it will be ok and if you are a pray-er.......lots of those!!! Good luck!
