2 Second "Body Shaking" of 18 Month Old

My 18 month old daughter will occasionaly have these slight 2 second "shakes" where her whole body sort of quivers. I've noticed it since at least 9 months old, and it doesn't happen very often (I haven't seen it in months, but my husband who is only with her maybe 10% of the time has seen it 2x in the past few weeks). I asked my pediatrician about it and he says these "shakes" or "shivers" are very common when they are finishing urinating. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

What can I do next?

My daughter did that too at about 2yrs old! I thought it was the oddest thing, but I never asked my pediatrician about it, thinking it was just a quirk. She's now 4 years, and has grown out of that phase. I'd say it lasted a year, or less.

My 15 month old daughter does the same thing and has been doing it since she was about 6 months (or maybe even younger). I never knew the cause of it, and never checked to see if she just peed when it happens, but she does it frequently. I just consider it a shiver because that's exactly what it looks like. I shiver sometimes, so I figure there's no reason why she shouldn't as well. She is totally fine and has no nuerological problems. Seizures would last a lot longer and would be accompanied by her "zoning out".

Our oldest, now 8 years old and completely healthy, did the same thing. His pediatrician, who was awesome and was in practice for over 35 years, told us the same thing. He suggested we feel the front of his diaper to see if it was warm right after one of these shivers - always was.

Yes, my daughter did that also. I think it is pretty common.

I have seen it. I have experienced it myself from time to time. All the heat leaving your body can give you a chill.

Hi, my 6yr old son often "shivers" after he urinates too. In fact I have seen my husband do it also so I don't think you have anything to worry about. I guess if it happens more frequently and you are seeing other symptoms you can ask to see a neuroligst. K.

Maybe I'm overprotective but I'd keep a very close eye on this for sure. Does she appear dizzy (stumbling more) or confused at all. I would just want to know that neurological issues are ruled completely out.

Definitely see another pediatrician or TWO.

I wish you luck.

A friend of mine's little girl used to do it a lot. She has since grown out of it, but she got the same answer. Pee shivers. There is an easy way to check if you want to reassure yourself, keep her with just training pants on, and see if it happens at the end of peeing! It is very common!

Hi, J.:

Ask your doc to refer you to another doc for a second opinion.
Good luck. D.

I agree with Donna. Start documenting them. If that was the case you'd notice it a lot more.

We call these the "pee shivers". It's very common. Almost every child does it. Now that you and your hubby are watching for it, it will seem as though she does it alot.
Don't let people scare you into thinking its seizures or neurological problems. So many people put their kids through unnecessary and invasisve testing "just to be sure" when there is a simple explanation.

I have never heard of pee shivers..who knew and I have 3 boys. Not to scare you but watch your childs eyes when this happens. My son was just diagnosed with epilepsy. He has Absense epilepsy..a mild form thank god. He as always had them but was always written off as a phase till it happened in front of a doc...Just watch and keep track of what is going on when it happens.
