2 1/2 y.o. Changing Sleep Schedule?

So, I'm trying to determine if my 2 1/2 y.o. dd actually needs an adjusted sleep schedule OR if she's just reacting to alot of changes right now. I have been on modified bedrest for 2 weeks (1 more week to go;) so her bedtime routine has changed and she has been going with alot of different friends during the days... and overall I haven't been as interactive with her.

Over the past few weeks, she has consistently been waking around 5:30am (a 1/2 hour- hour earlier than before) and a few nites ago... she started to NOT go to sleep right away... rather come out of her room multiple times. She told DH she was scared of the dark, so we now leave a brighter nite lite on in her room. Last nite, I did our normal bedtime routine, but then sat in the rocker across the room until she was asleep. She woke 5 hours later and came into our room. I put her back into bed, sat in the rocker next to her bed and sang lullabies until asleep again. She woke at 5:30AM!

I really would like her to keep her nap/ quiet time in her room... but it does seem that when she doesn't nap she sleeps better/longer at nite. Many have suggested I keep up the naptime so that she is accustomed to it when baby #2 comes along...

I'm wondering if I should try even 1/2 hour later bedtime. In the last week... we did put her down a little later b/c family was here... then she slept until about 7pm!

What I've looked up about toddler sleep needs says they need about 12-14 hours of sleep. She gets an average of 11 1/2- 12 depending on how long she naps.

Maybe she just needs less sleep than the average?!

any suggestions helpful!!!

HI!!! I know that the nap time offers you some much needed you time but she may need less of it. My one daughter (now 7yo) gave up napping completely at 18 months old but slept through the night. She still goes to bed around 7 (up at about 6:30am) but that will change since it takes her about an hour to fall asleep now. She needs less so can go to bed later. My 21 month old daughter only takes a 45 minute nap sometimes depending on the activity level off the day. She does go all day some times with no nap but is in bed by 7:30 (aprox) and sleeps to 7 or 8 am straight through. I am of the thought that don't wake sleeping babies but if she doesn't need so much sleep try putting her to bed later and see if it gets her to sleep later in the morning. Good Luck!!! A.

I would say ditch the naps, you don't need them when baby number two comes along, they might be nice but you can find other ways to relax when she is awake, plus the extra time during the day when she is up can be time spent together so she doesn't feel left out. My daughter gave up napping around turning two and she gets all of her sleep at night. I put her to bed around 9 pm everynight and she wakes up between 10 and 10:30 in the morning. Night sleeping would be considerable less if I napped her everday.

Hi, D.. Congratulations on the new one coming. God bless those two special children. Your daughter may not need the nap during the day. Some kids do and some don't. If you want her to sleep at night, perhaps napping during the day is not what she needs. If you need her to nap, perhaps have her be busy, do something very active in the morning or something. Go to the park or whatever it is that may be active for her. My oldest son who is almost 3 1/2 yo still naps, but my 2 1/2 yo is showing that he really doesn't want to nap, but is very tired and takes a nap about 3:30p or 4p and that is a no-no. I haveto work out something on that since I have a 7 mo old and he naps occasionally, but I will wait until he gets bigger for me to teach him to nap when the others are unless he is the type who doesn't need to nap. Some of my friends children don't nap and some of us have children who do. You will learn what is does and doesn't need and who she is as a person. Maybe going to bed early isn't for her. My boys go to bed about 9p or 9:30p and they sleep good through the night, exception for the oldest one gets up to go potty. Only you will know what your daughter likes, needs and what kind of person she is too. If you have questions, feel free to ask and I will do my best from experiences and I'll ask around too. God bless you and your family and to that other God gift.

my daughter did this around the same age -- also when i was almost due with baby #2 - and it turned out that it was b/c she was getting ready to give up naps. once she stopped napping she asked us to go to bed at 630 nightly! good luck!

all children are different and those averages are only AVERAGES. that means some children sleep less, some more, so you cant go by that. my daugher from birth has slept way less than the averages. if you child is happy and not cranky, they are getting enough sleep.

keeping a nap because of the new baby coming isnt necessarily helpful is she is going to be later. we had our 2nd and our daughter no longer naps. its not something that should have anything to do with a new baby.

just start experimenting. first i would see if she needs to go to bed a little later and watch her behaviour for a few days. if there is no change, i would put bedtime back(maybe even earlier) and dont demand she needs a nap. if she asks or gets really cranky, then you know she still needs it. you could then try waking her earler from her nap, and see if that makes a difference. you just need to try different things, each for a few days, and figure out what works.

i will say though i had a hard time for about 3 months where my daughter woulnt nap but at 4-5 pm she would be passing out. but then wake up cranky, or be happy but then not fall asleep until very late. i think there is a transition period thats difficult.

Hi ,Their I don't know what your normal routine is. But. I run a daycare. I plan nap time right after lunch. which is around 12-12:30 in the afternoon.they usually sleep for about 2 to 2 1/2 hour. then they have couple hour before they will sleep before bed time. If your child sleep until 7 pm. It' s impossible for her to sleep all night. It's almost if as adult sleep all day you'll probably won't sleep until late.
