I have a 19 month old little girl who has always been a great sleeper both at night and at nap. All of a sudden she will NOT sleep at night, nothing has changed in her routine and we have changed nothing, yet she will not lay down in her bed, we put her down and she comes running. We have stayed up ALL NIGHT walking her back to her room and putting her back down and she will give in after about one hour or so but then she is back up in 30 or 40 minutes, and we do that all night. If I lay down and sleep with her she will sleep all night, but not by herself. At nap she will fuss for about 5 minutes at the most then go to sleep and sleep the whole time. I have tried night lights, staying in her room until she falls asleep nothing has worked and I am so tired of fighting with her at night just to go to bed. If anyone has an idea of how to get her to stay in her own bed and go to sleep please let me know.

What can I do next?

Have you tried a body pillow? My 19 mo old daughter and my almost 5 yr old son both have them. Or a huge stuffed animal. That way they have something to snuggle up to like they would Mom or Dad. I still put her to sleep at night (rocking) but other than that she does pretty good in her own big girl bed.

hey,
we just had this problem with 1 of my 2 yr old boys. i tried night lights, music, everything but the only thing that worked was being consistant. he is still in his crib, so i had to end up doing the cry it out which is truly heart breaking but after the 3rd night he now goes to sleep without crying & sleeps all night. so my advice is to take some time to think about what you think would work for your child & then set your mind to do it no matter how hard it gets in the middle of it, b'c it is so easy to give in when they cry & we both need sleep. i think if you keep walking her back in w/o talking, hugs or eye contact then it will get boring & after a week of this she will quit trying. but if you did it for 3 nights & then gave in on the 4th then the next time you decide to attempt it, it may take longer.

hope you find a solution & get some sleep soon

Blessings!

Been there, done that! I tried the very same things that you have tried, to no avail. My 27 month old climbed out of her crib just before turning 1 year old. I took it down and put her in the twin bed that was already in her room (with bed rails). She fought it for about 2 weeks. I finally figured out that she didn't like having the door closed. So, we have our "go to bed" routine of teeth brushing, reading, and saying night night to everyone in the family (including pets), then she crawls in her bed and goes to sleep (sometimes she lays there "talking" for a while with her baby dolls). Hope this helps! D. H.

I agree with the mom that said she should still be in a crib, in stead of a bed.

Also, it's possible that her diaper is wet and uncomfortable, make sure that you don't let her have anything else to drink after her final change for the night.

Our 2 year old started having trouble after she was sleeping in a bed, instead of in a crib, but we found that it was because she was wet. When we solved that problem, she started sleeping much better. She is almost 2.5 years old, and is the size of a 3.5 year old, the crib is no longer an option for her, though I kept her in it as long as I could. She always slept best in there.

If you put a baby gate across her bedroom doorway, she will have to at least stay in her room. That may be a good way to start.

Hi,
I think she is too young to be in a bed and should still be in a crib. She is still a baby. Babies don't wander unless they have access to wandering. You took away her security and safety for freedom that she isn't old enough for. What if she got up in the night and you were sound asleep and there was a fire, heaven forbid, you would not automatically know where to find her. Putting her back in a crib just for that reason alone would make her safer. The time will come when she will be ready and more mature for a bed of her own. She needs a crib for now. I am a grandma of 14 and have been a foster parent of 40. I truly hope this helps.

I agree with the lady that stated try the stuffed animal deal. My son is 17 months old he has to sleep with his bear and sippy cup of milk.i leave a cool low fan running and leave a small light on. My son also is still in the crib i bought him a bed and he slept in it 2x and even though we had side net rails up both times he ended up in the floor from tossing and turning at night,my son gives me no problem with going to sleep threw the night.unless he takes a long nap

I agree with the gate suggestion. We close my son's door when he goes to bed, then put the gate across it & open it when we go to bed. He will actually stay in his bed until he's given permission to get out of it (which surprises us) and doesn't get up to play with whatever toys are in the room. If nothing else, she'll stay in her room until she falls asleep, whether it's on the floor or in her bed.

Good luck!

When this happened with my son, I asked him what was going on. It took a while, but finally I was able to find out he was truly frightened. I came to the conclusion that it was a spiritual battle and we prayed and prayed over bedtime. I didn't force him to sleep where he was afraid. I just couldn't bring myself to do that. But, we continued praying and in about 2 weeks, it was much better.

If I read this right, is she in her own big girls bed and no crib? If that is the case mine did the same thing. She was 2yr4m when we got her a big girls bed. We still had the crib set up for the next child on the way in a month. Instead of sleeping in her bed she wanted to sleep in the crib. She was never a climber so thats why we never got her a bed sooner. Like another poster said, put a gate up. Or if you and your daughter feel comfortable, close her door and on the inside of her door put a anit-kid proof door thing (cant think of the real name of it) so she cant get out. My niece was the same way and they ended up putting two gates on top of each other so she could not climb out. My 2yr4mo old took about a month to get use to haveing a bed girls bed and let her new sister have the crib. Good luck to you all.
