Is it possible that he's teething? It sounds like he just want something to eat, perhaps to put pressure on his gums? Try giving him some orajel at bed time, or a bit of tylenol.

I have a 17 month old son who up until about his 1st birthday was sleeping through the night (when the transition from formula to milk occurred). He was a wonderful sleepier until then. He is advanced for his age so he was actually on solid food prior to this change. He still eats great. His schedule has never changed expect going from 2 naps a day to one nap. When I told his pediatrician about this and the fact that we are back up sometimes 2 and 3 feedings a night, she suggested giving him oatmeal (high fiber snacks) prior to going to bed. She said it sounded like he was waiting up hungry. Well now we are still waking up and sometimes not to eat. He has a crib but because of all these moments of wakefulness he has been sleeping with me. I am trying to get him back in his crib without any success. Recently the past 2 nights, he has wanted to stay up later which then places him to over-tired. Then to add icing to the cake he woke up early this morning with a combination if night terror/tremors. The only thing he wanted to do was sit on my lap hold his bottle in one hand and his precious moments night time buddy in the other. Please if anyone can give me advice on how to rectify the not sleeping and to keep him full through the night I would appreciate it more then you would know.

Try putting him a toddler bed. My son went from sleeping all night at 12 months of age to 18 months then at 18 months stop sleeping all night. We found he was hitting his head on the crib walls and sides and waking himself up and not wanting to go back to sleep without someone holding him. After we put him in a bed he went back to sleeping all night again.
Try tylenol - it could be his teeth (2 year old molars) or his ears hurting him. A doctor could look in his ears and check that for you. Sometimes sleep disruption is th eonly symptom kids have.
How frustrating, just when you think you've got him down for the duration... Do you have white noise in his room or any type of classical music? this may be a start, could he be hearing something in your house? Do you give him a bottle before bed? is this whole milk? Do you rush in or wait a little bit to see if he will put himself back to sleep (this is hard, I know but well worth it in the long run) I assume you checked for a fever, there has been a virus going around and my 7 month old has woken up several times in one night and the last time it was with a fever. I hope he starts to sleep again for you!
