Hello ladies, I am hoping some of you can help me with my oldest daughter. Every month on her first and second day of her cycle, she is doubled over in pain. If she has other symptoms she is not telling me. We just moved to Alpharetta and we do not yet have health insurance. Do you have any ideas that might help with the pain?

What can I do next?

Hello. Some things that worked with mr and recommeded by a doctor were small portions when eating and no caffine.
Also, a cup of warm tea (chamomile)works great. I would think she needs to be seen by a doctor. Hope this helps.

I agree with others that if she is not on birth control already to try that. I was put on it at age 14 because of irregularity and bad cramping. And ibuprofen has always helped me at the hint of cramping and I have always taken 3-4 pills at a time. I lived in Fla and went to planned parenthood for paps and got the depo shots birth control but they should be everywhere now. www.plannedparenthood.org. Its worth a try without insurance and the doctors there are as knowledgeable and friendly as a regular office. good luck.

I had really bad cramps myself in college--doubled over in pain as well for one day of my cycle. Then my sister recommended I take Midol (read dosage on label) or ibuprophen the day before my period started--or right when I noticed it began. This helped tremendously!! Now at the start of the slightest twinge I will take the smallest dose, and that has worked wonders for me. Also, drink lots of water to keep the body hydrated.

Your daughter could really benefit from seeing a Chiropractor. My daughter started seeing one 4 years ago (she is 24 now) and it has helped a lot. She used to double over in pain every month. She goes to the Chiropactor every other week now and she is pain free. Good Luck!

Hi. I had those same problems when I was 15. I started my cycle at 14 and my body went into fits. What helped was back rubs by my mom with rubbing alcohol and a warm blanket. Watch what she eats the week before her cycle, like things high in salt, caffeine, things like that. Eventhough she may crave certain things right before her cycle starts, just monitor it. Watch how she reacts the week or two before and then how her body responds during her cycle. She may be tired and want caffeine, but it is not good for girls on their cycle, especially if she started late. I had a college professor recommend to take tylenol or advil the week or a few days before and that will minimize the cramps the week of the cycle.
Have her drink a lot of fluids. She may not want to eat, but just have her drink hot liquids at night to relax her, and a few stretches at night as well.

Just some things to consider. I hope this helps. Once you get insurance definitely talk to the doctor about a low dose monophasic (estrogen only) birth control pill. It helps to regulate the cycle. I didn't get on it until I was 18, but I was not sexually active either. But the BCPs did help with the cramps and mood swings.

I hate to be someone to tell you not to follow the directions on the medicine label, BUT 1 tablet of Ibruprofen every 4-6 hrs is not going to do it for those of us that SUFFER like your daughter. I take 4 at the first hint of a cramp and I usually can cut it off before itx's too late. Then I continue with 3 or 4 every 6 hrs for the first couple days. 4 tablets = 800mg = prescription strength. I use generic Ibuprofen and it works just as well for me as Advil.

Have you tried to see if you are eligible for any medical assistance for the children? There is a program called Peachcare for kids. (I believe) You would have to call the agencies to find out if they still have it in operation. I'm assuming that you are in Georgia. Or maybe, call Planned Parenthood to see if they can help her. Have you tried Midol? I know it has caffeine it though. I hope you find some answers for your precious daughter.

Hi L.,

I also suffered from extreme pain during the first few years of my cycle, and off and on throughout my life. I agree with others that Tylenol or Advil works, but make sure your daughter drinks a FULL glass of water when taking either medicine. I also agree that regular exercise, like a walk, will help. Also a heating pad does wonders. Think about the single use heating pads that stick on, they are great because you are not tied to an electric outlet. You can find them at walmart, etc. They make one just for the abdomen, you wear it right next to your skin and the heat lasts at least 8 hours.

TLC also helps at this point. I used to go to my best friend's house and her mom would put me on the couch with a heating pad, a blanket, and a cup of hot tea. Just having someone fuss over me helped!

I also agree that if you could get her on a low-dose BCP, that is what really stopped the pain and heavy periods for me.

Good luck,

L.

MIDOL is the only thing that helped me with extremely bad cramps. First sign of the period, I would take some. Don't worry chances are she just had bad cramping like some of us get. :)

I had something very similar at that age. I usually missed 1-2 days of school a cycle because of it. The doctor ended up putting me on birth control pills (orthocyclen) and it helped tremendously.

Ibuprofen and watching what you eat is important. Also, exercise lowers the pain. Food with high fat, chocolate, caffeine help contribute to the pain in a big way. After I go to the bathroom a few times in the beginning, the pain tends to subside. Also, if I have been active in my exercise routine, I do not have cramps at all.
