My son started randomly vomiting right after his first birthday. We thought it was just the stomach flu (another family at the party had the flu and didn't know it). He appeared better and we went about a week and everything was fine. Then he has gotten sick 4 more times. It's weird because he only throws up in the morning. He'll wake up cough, gag and then vomit. He'll vomit all morning long, very thick mucus vomit, weird smell and then he will nap for several hours and then wake up perfectly fine. He usually has diarrhea for several days after he vomits but the last two episodes he only had diarrhea a couple of times. He has had a head MRI to check for any brain abnormalities and everything came back ok. He had a RAZZ test for a milk allergy it came back ok and he also had a blood test done to check for Celiac Disease and it came back ok. He is on Lactaid lactose free whole milk, just because he does seem to have a sensitive stomach. The GI doctor we saw thinks he is just having a rough time overcoming the flu. But that was back in the beginning of July when this all started and it's now the beginning of October and he just woke up vomiting this morning. My husband and I wonder if its post nasal drip or an allergy to something he is eating. His cheeks look chapped I noticed when he got up and little rashed. Has anyone experienced this? I did give him Benadryl last night to help his allergies I wondered if it was that. It's really frustrating and hard to watch him go through this. I'm not sure what to do, I don't want to subject him to unnecessary evasive treatments but on the other hand I don't want to let it go and cause permit damage. The doctors don't seem to take our concerns over him having an allergy seriously. I just wish my husband and I could figure out what is triggering it. I hoped that posting this on here maybe someone would read it and go "oh this sounds like what we went through" and give us some answers. Please HELP!!!!!

My grandson has allergies and the mucus builds up overnight. When he gets up in the morning, he starts coughing and ends up vomiting. He also has mucus in his stool from swallowing it during the night. He is now on prescription medication and hasn't had an episode for almost three months.

If you think its allergies get him tested at an allergist. Severe congestion can cause vomiting. Could also be acid reflux. Which if you took him to a GI they would have thought of that.

What led the doctor to do all those tests? I'm assuming they ruled out strep. There is a blood test they can do to check to see how well his immune system is working. My daughter and son had it. They check the immunoglobulin levels. The majority of your immune system is in your gut. SO it may be allergies. Allergies are of 2 type. One is the dangerous reaction. The other is where it makes you miserable. I would see an immunologist who can check out allergies and the immune system. My kids have both allergies and immune issues. I also highly recommend if you can see an osteopath. I see one here south of Cleveland and she is great. She uses non invasive techniques to treat me and my kids. I would be willing to discuss this with you more if you want. Some kids also have a physical reason why they are vomiting. I don't remember what it is called. It may be a hernia. Anyways I have had to deal with many doctors over the years because of my daughter. She had a few illnesses at birth but nothing was identified until age 13. I always told them there was something not right but they always blew me off. Well she got real sick at 13 and they finally realized she had immune system issues and allergies plus autonomic issues (LOW BLOOD PRESSURE). It has been a long journey for us. She is now 15 and we are still trying to figure out how to manage her symptoms. Good luck to you.

Could be the post nasal drip. If it's really thick mucous, have you tried childrens Mucinex to help break it up? They make it in a dissolvable flavored powder now too.

I'd also make an appointment with an allergist, and by-pass his pediatrician completely. My pediatrician didn't think my son had any issues with his tonsils...but he was snoring while awake & vomiting because his gag reflex was so sensitive due to his tonsils constantly touching each other! I made an appointment with an ENT, and turns out his tonsils & adenoids had to come out. Moms have an instinct, sometimes you have to act on it.

Also, i don't know if this is remotely in the ballpark of why he's vomiting, but has he been tested for cystic fibrosis? I know with that affliction it produces thick mucous in the lungs. Children with that also are known to have a productive cough & very salty skin. you can look up the symptoms online & see if anything sounds familiar. Just good to have all your bases covered! Good luck mama!

I didn't deal with this with my child, but my dh does this every so often. If he doesn't drink a hot drink in the morning like coffee, he gets gagged on mucus from his sinuses and ends up throwing up. The hot drink helps disolve the mucus. Maybe warm tea or something else could be tried first thing in the morning. I really hope this helps and that it isn't anything serious. If it continues, I would force the issue with the docs and make them schedule more in depth tests.

Try Childrens Zyrtec or Claritin. It will take a few days for this to kick in and you have to give it every day but it will help with allergies. Make sure the Benadrly is dye free. My son can't do the red medicines because they have red dye in it and it makes him worse not better. No one will test for a red dye allergy but when I take it out of his diet, his chapped cheeks go away completely!
Make a list of foods you feed him for a few weeks. See if there is something he eats the night before that affects his mornings. This will help with a food allergy.

Our son has something similar to your problem. We took him to the doctor and went through all the tests for allergies and found that he was healthy. Turned out that he has hyper-asmatha that is treated with and oral med daily. Since treating his post nasal drip and vomiting decreased dramaticaly. Our doctor told us that there is a very good chance that he will out grow this within a couple of years. The only down fall is the meds do make him hyper and sleep can be a challenge but with a ill young one sleep is a challenge anyways. Good luck!!!

My son had a similar problem and still has problems with it, except we usually vomit at night. I went through the same thing with doc's just brushing it off, finally someone listened and we did an endoscopy. He was recently diagnosed with esophagitis..which is an allergic reaction, so we had allergies tested and he has many inhalent allergies and food sensitivities..since the diagnosis i have been able to control his vomiting more and worry less....hope it helps
