13 Month Old Keeps Overflowing Diaper at Night

I have a 13 month old that must dream about water all night long!! I change him right before bed and all week he has woken up soaked. He literally overflows the diaper, soaks his pjs and all his bedding. I am tired of laundering his sheets daily. I've thought about using those plastic training pants on top of his diaper, but I'm not sure they would fit or work. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Wow! I got some great advice! I went out and got the Huggies overnight diapers. This morning was the first morning my son woke up dry in over a week! I loved the ideas of maxi pads. I will definitely add these tips to my mommy hints book! Thank you mamasource!

My 17 month old twins did that for about a week, then i tried the next size diapers for bedtime only and have not had a wet bed since. The other suggestion may be to try Huggies' Overnites--they work good too.

I would think maybe you need to cut back on the liquids and give more food to get him thru the night. Cereal is great and helps them sleep as it's filling.

I had the same issue with my daughter at that age, and I agree with many moms here: limit pre-bed drinking and move up a diaper size. My daughter is the most thirsty person I know, so it's still tough to give her nothing to drink...but I do limit her drinking to a few ounces - of water only - atleast an hour before bedtime.

I have also made it a point to always check her diaper when I get up to tinkle during the night. If it's pretty wet, I'll change it. This also gives me a better idea of when she is actually wetting her diaper.

For me, switching to the next bigger size of diaper fixed this problem for both my boys. In fact, it became the "indicator" that it was time to move up a size! Obviously, there might be something else to be concerned about, but it could also just be you'll buy bigger diapers for a little bit longer. :}

When my daughter "overflowed" at night it was around the time that I noticed that the diapers were a perfect fit and starting to look snug. So I would go up one size and that took care of it. I never tried the night time diapers, but that would be a good idea. My daughter was just about out of diapers when those really "took off".

This might sound weird but my niece was the same way - my sis in law starting putting a maxi pad on the inside of her diaper and it helped with the leaks in the morning. I thought it was wierd but it worked.

Try going up a size. That same thing would happen to our son and as soon as we changed sizes, he stopped leaking. We use luvs, and LOVE them! They are cheaper and are great diapers. Only on occasions do we have a leaky diaper, and that's usually our fault for not changing him sooner.

Hey A.! My daughter does the same thing. She is 2 now, but we have had the issue for sometime. Have you tried Huggies Overnights? I would put her in them right before she laid down for bed. We still had some leaks, but better than with using regular diapers. Now that she is older, we use Pull-Ups Nighttime. Good luck finding a solution!!

I had the same problem with my son. I actually found the answer to the problem on these message boards! So I'll pass that along. All you have to do is buy a bigger sized diaper for at night. My son right now is in a size 4 diaper so at night he goes into a 5. It is so nice not waking up to a mess. Hope that helps.

My son drinks like you would not believe, and we had the same problem with him! Try the Overnight Diapers. I think only Huggies makes them. They are a bit more expensive, but we only use one per night, and it saves us a lot on laundry detergent, time in the morning, and sanity! Overnight diapers rock!

Hey, that is exactly what was happening to my daughter a few months ago. She was only about four or five months old. She would sleep through the night just fine, but in the morning her bed would be soaked. I used exactly what you suggested. Plastic training pants from my three year old. They worked great!!!! I felt a little guilty doing it, but I'm sure she was much more comfortable!!!!! They fit her fine, yes they were big, but they didn't leak out. Hope this helps! M.

Theyre more expensive but the Huggies night time diapers or "Overnights" worked really well for my little pottier! They have the boxer ones for older kids and I think those are called "Overnights" but the ones Im talking about are actually diapers. I cant remember exactly what they are called. Worked wonders on my little girl. Hope this helps. Get on the Huggies website and you can register to get free coupons and stuff. Diapers are so expensive! Also Luvs and Pampers also have websites you can register on to get free coupons!

I've seen an off brand of disposable diaper doublers at Toys R Us/Babies R Us before. They are inserts that you put in the diaper that increase the absorbency. I've never used them, but it might be worth a try.

We are using cloth diapers and LOVING them! They really aren't difficult to use and we have not had one hint of a diaper rash since starting.

If you are up for it, try BumGenius 3.0 diapers (you can get them at the Cotton Babies store or their website). They are one size and snap in various ways to 'grow' with your child. They also have two microfiber inserts - one 'newborn' and one for older kiddos. You can double them up to hold more liquid for heavy wetters. The microfiber lining wicks moisture away from the baby too, so they don't have to lay in wetness.

We really like these diapers and even if you just get a few for the night-time, you will save yourself a lot of headaches.

You can also try the 'Ultimate Sheet Saver'. It's a waterproof sheet saver that snaps to the bars of the crib and covers the entire mat... not necessarily pretty to look at, but it would save you from doing so much laundry.

What size diaper is he wearing? If they are leaking thru the diaper they are in, you need to put them in one size bigger. Also what I found that worked is using the Huggies Supreme diapers and they also have Huggies overnight diapers that hold quite abit of fluid.

A lot of my daycare kids would be this way if I didn't get up and change them. I know it's a pain. But around midnight I get up and change everyone in diapers. I turn only the hallway light on and move them very carefully and slowly. They all go right back to sleep. I never have any problems once they get used to me doing this. This morning I had a mom pick up her son from me for the first time at 6am. She told me he is usually drenched in the mornings. I didn't have any problem with him last night even though it was his first time for me changing him at midnight. Sometimes I change at 1 or 2am instead, it just depends on when I wake up to go to the bathroom or answer the door and let someone out.

I don't mean to alarm you, but when kids get juvenile diabetes this is a common warning sign. Extreme thirst, heavy urinating and weight loss. I just wanted to make you aware.

sounds like you should go up a size on diapers(at least at night)- try huggies supreme and see if that helps! I'd buy just a small pack at first to see if that brand/size works- you may have to try a few! ps- the plastic training pants really aren't that great: hot, messy and all they do is let the wet pool up inside so be careful if you pull them off as all the wet just rolls out of them! :)

I have a son the same age and had the same problem. This is what worked for me--cut his liquids off after dinner (which is 5:30 to 6pm) for us. Then change right before bed (which is 8pm for us). But they do make 'nighttime' diapers by Huggies -- purple package -- which absorb more and I've used with my other 2 kids. With my other 2 it is a stage and they grow out of it. Good luck!

We always had this problem with my daughter. She just has a huge bladder and she is always drinking fluids. Usually when it started getting really bad was about the time that we switched to the next size diaper. It wasn't until I put her in the bigger size that I realized that the other ones were really getting too small. Also try to limit his fluid intake before bed. This is easier said then done, especially with one so little but it really does help.

i agree with what everyone else has said.

1. cut back on fluids, i don't give ANY an hour before bedtime or later.

2. go up a size on the diapers. i have used all brands and the cheapest i've found that still hold well are luvs, so i love those. they're just as good as pampers from what i can see. avoid store brand diapers like the plague!

3. if all else fails, follow suzi's advice and change him during the night - maybe right before YOU go to sleep (assuming you go to bed later than he does). that way you won't have to wake up at midnight.

good luck! i've been there - not for a week straight, but i feel for ya.

Hi A.,

Not sure if you have gotten this suggestion yet or not, but my son also leaked terribly - EVERY night! It was so sad to have him be wet and cold every morning. We tried Overnights and bigger diapers, even doubling diapers up (poor kid!), but nothing worked. Finally, we started putting a Serenity pad in his diaper - this are for incontinence, like Depends. Worked PERFECTLY!!! He almost never woke up wet after that. A bag of pads lasts a long time, and it was a relatively inexpensive solution to a rough problem. Also, they didn't cause him the discomfort of doubled diapers or bigger sizes that didn't fit him.

Good luck, every kid is shaped differently - so you might want to try all of the suggestions you get.

well, they work but then they lock the moisture in and set him up for a diaper rash or infection. ella did this, too... i had to change her when she went to bed and then when i went to bed to keep from washing daily. what honestly works great tho is to get water proof cloth pads for adults and lay them over the sheets. they are so big they cover most of the bed and it keeps the sheets dry. you will have to wash them but with a kid that little i bet you do laundry every day anyway. training pads for puppies work ok, too, but they wad up underneath them.

Wow! We have the same first name! I don't see that too often!

I have a plastic cover that fit over top the crib sheets, so that if there's an accident, you don't have to change the sheets. Of course, that won't help you with your baby's pj's or wet diaper. The first time I had to change the sheets on our crib, I thought, "never again,"; it took forever to get them off since they fit so snuggly! You can get these plastic top sheets at Babies R Us for about $20. They snap on & off and it only takes a second. The top of the cover is soft, like a crib sheet, but plastic underneath. Also, it only covers the top, so you can see your sheets between the spindles of the crib. Definitely worth the money!

My 21-m.o. DD has the same issue occasionally. She sleeps part of the night with us usually, so sometimes we wake up wet, too. Ugh. I use some tips I got here--larger diaper at night, and putting a super-size maxi-pad in her nighttime diaper. It takes care of this problem most times (it had been just about every night), but occasionally she still wakes up soaked.

Try cutting out his liquid intake close to bedtime. Have him stop drinking about an hour to two hours before bed. Put a clean diaper on him, which I'm sure you do, right before bed and that should help. He probably has a really strong bladder and when he's sleeping is when he relaxes enough to realease what is in it. Limiting his liquids before bed should help some. Good luck and God Bless.

In my experience with my 14 month old daughter, I've had to just experiment with different brands and sizes of diapers. I started out with Parents Choice size 3 diapers from Walmart when we first started having the problem. I found that Huggies were TERRIBLE at stopping leaks. Luvs stopped the leaks wonderfully, but my daughter broke out with a horrible diaper rash from them. I finally found Pampers Baby Dry to work. My best friend swears by Pampers Cruisers. I went through all that experimenting when my daughter was around 10 or 11 months old. She just started leaking again at night about a couple weeks ago, so I went from Pampers Baby Dry size 3, to size 4. It's worked so far. So, that's my suggestion to you... try different brands and sizes, and even different fits within the brands. Just get the small packages of different kinds until you find what works best.

This happened to us with both babies around that time or a little earlier. I got those sheets that just strap to the rail of the crib (sorry, the name of them just escaped me). anyway they are the sheet that has the matress pad with the sheet on top and just strap on. I would put a regular matress pad and sheet on the bed and then put the other thing on top. then, i could just change the top thing in the morning. they are not cheap, but very much worth the money. with my daughter i used to go in there just before i went to bed and change her diaper (ya know buy me a couple hours of filling it) and sometimes that would work. I tried that with my son but he isn't as sound a sleeper as she is so he woke up and had trouble going back down, so we didn't do that anymore. i have heard people say to try bigger diapers, but my son took those off. The phase goes away, too, if you were wondering :)
