12 y.o. Throwing up When Staying up Late at Night?

Our 12 year old son has been having an upset stomach and throwing up whenever he is up past 10pm. He is an early to bed (by 9), early to rise (by 7) child and has been his whole life, even as a baby! This usually happens when he is on a Scout campout or church lock-in, or we are out of town and in a different time zone, but has occasionally happened at home on a late night activity. Is this just a "nervous stomach" thing? Not fond of calls late at night saying that he is sick again...

I remember getting stomach aches when I was a teenager if I had to babysit and it was past midnight. But I never threw up, so maybe it is a late night event. Just trying to avoid a doctor visit if it is not needed.

What can I do next?

Maybe he needs a small snack. I know since I can remember if I stay up too late, ususually past midnight now, I HAVE to eat something or I'll get sick to my stomach. It's weird how I only get that feeling at night. When I was a teenager was when I first noticed it and I'd get to where I couldn't fall asleep until I had a snack.....even if I had eaten dinner that night.......and still to this day it's the same but now I'm just aware as to why I get that feeling and know how to fix it. Usually I'll make some english muffins, toast, sandwich, popcorn, crackers, yogurt, pudding, jello, apple, cantaloupe, banana, cup of OJ, etc. Something not to fullfilling on the stomach but enough to get rid of that nautious feeling. So next time he gets a nautious feeling, even if he doesn't think he "can" eat, get him to eat a little something and see if that helps! Good luck to you and your son.......HTH!

B., I Have a daughter who used to get sick every time she would stay up to late or she would be nervous about a game or appointment we had. We tried counseling but the only thing that worked was the Dr. putting her on Concerta it's a low dose and not as strong as others. I am not a fan of drugs but we had to do something. She's been on it for about 2 years I don't think she needs it but the Dr. says as long as she thinks it helps her to keep her on it. Hope this helps

If it becomes more frequent, definitely consult the DR. Meanwhile, document the symptoms to that next time you visit the DR (like for scout physical, shots, etc.) you can mention it.

sounds like anxiety to me, or plain ole lack of sleep. Poor kid. When opportunity arises see if you can get him to talk about his worries. Give him techniques to calm himself. My guess is this is something he will outgrow.

I had a similar problem that started out at the same age...except I threw up if I woke up early in the morning or didn't get a full night's sleep. I did go to the doctor. I can't remember the diagnosis or theory that was suggested. But I do know that after that visit I started having starchy foods like rice or saltines for breakfast or a mid morning snack (if I felt to nauseous to eat). It settled my stomach and after a little while I felt fine. Maybe a late night snack is needed??
