11 Month and Food

I have an 11 month old. I can't seem to feed him table food. I give him food like mashed potatoes, rice with minched chicken, and tiny tiny pieces of pasta but he always throws up. Is this normal? He can eat pureed foods without a problem..i've brought it up to my nutritionist and DR. but no real suggestions. He's already at a low weight (he was born 7.3 lbs...now he's about 19 lbs at 11 months).

Maybe it's just my cooking. Any suggestions? I want to bulk him up a lil. He's thin.

A., I'm sorry, I can't offer up much advice as far as the eating goes, but I did want to tell you that I've got three boys - my oldest is 9 and my youngest is 17 months... and at 17 months he only weighs 22 lbs. ALL my boys weighed about the same and they are all VERY healthy. 19 lbs at one year is extrememly normal. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the weight thing. Good luck.

Sounds exactly like my daughter!!! She would gag on ANY piece of food we'd give her...even the pureed! I worried my head off and the pediatrician just kept saying "she's just not ready."

He was right! Around 11.5 months one day she just started eating cheerios, fruit, you name it!! She was around her older cousins and watched them and just joined right in. It was awesome! So hang in there...it WILL happen!! Some babies have much more sensitive gag reflexes than others. I wish I hadn't worried so much and knew that it would all work out :)

My first son was the same way. Any texture would make him gag and throw up. Around 18 months he finally grew out of it. Just stick to baby food, yogurt drinks, protein drinks....they'll be fine. There is no rush into table foods. Good Luck, J.

Our daughter who is 4 yrs now would not eat table food but we noticed that she would eat vegetables and fruits. She weighed 20 for about 1 and 1/2 years. Now she is only 32lbs. During the age that your son is in we took her to the doctor to get tested for any illnesses and she was fine they just told us to find things that she liked or would eat. We give her vitamins and now she is still a picky eater but it was trail and error for us. She just started eating meat last year. Just try to introduce different foods to him some he will like but there will be some he wil not. I hope this helps

It's not your cooking most likely. I would continue to give him purees until he's really ready for table food. If he's at a low weight, I would offer lots of avocados and whole milk yogurt with fruit purees. - www.weelicious.com

I would make it thick juice first and put some flavor in it. Like a shake.

My son was the same way. He gagged and threw up if I gave him anything with and substance to it. He ate all the stage two foods just fine. His doctor said not to worry that when he was ready he would start eating other foods. The doctor was right. When he was 13 months he started eating almost anything. He is now 16 months and a very good eater. You child may just not be ready for the texture yet. Good luck.

our daughter threw up solid food for awhile when she was that young too. I think it's just a developmental thing. Some kids have a gag reflex that doesn't go away as quick as others. We just kept feeding baby food and then every once in a while would use the chunkier baby food and gradually one day she was okay with it. Don't worry - you've never heard of an adult who was still eating baby food right? :)

19 lbs is still a healthy weight. My 2 yr old daughter didn't hit 20 lbs until 13 months. My 8 month old just started gagging yesterday... I had never heard of the gag reflex problem before, but that must be what it is.

I agree with the avocado and whole-milk yogurt idea if you want to bulk up...lots of healthy fats.

He might always be thin. My middle child is 5 and weighs around 36 pounds is all. He eats more then his weight in food a day LOL. The older child are the baby are both a bit on the husky side, so this thin eating machine is a bit of a family joke, since he does out eat both his siblings
As for the throwing up food, maybe his young digestive system is just not ready for anything other then the baby food. Maybe you can wait a few months with the table food and try again. The best of luck to you and yours.

The whole feeding experience can be frustrating, can't it? I used to think it was my cooking as well. My son would eat Gerber sweet potatoes, but if I baked a sweet potato and pureed it, he wouldn't touch it. Between 7-12 mos, my son just would barely eat anything beyond jarred stage 1 or 2 foods. There went my noble efforts to only feed my son fresh from the market, home-cooked foods like all my friends did. His weight fell off the charts and even dropped one month. My pedi wasn't too concerned; she said she's had a few patients who didn't start eating until 14-15 mos. So, I just kept offering him various things to eat, and he'd just refuse or gag. Then, one day, my husband and I were eating these spicy fish tacos, and my son just grabbed some and started eating...and hasn't stopped. Of all things for him to start eating...a spicy fish taco. Now, there are days my son, now 2, will eat more than I do but days where he will barely eat anything. He's still small but healthy. I don't even think he was 19 lbs at 11 mos, and he's barely 23 lbs now. Peer pressure does wonders to get my son to eat now. I'm sure if you keep offering him things, one day he'll start eating too.
