10 Month Old Is Teething - Now She Won't Sleep at Night

My 10 month old has his first tooth breaking in. Since probably last thursday, he has not slept well. He usually wakes up twice a night, sometimes only once if we are lucky. He would sleep around 7 and then only wake up 2 times between 7pm and 5am.

However, he is waking up 6-7 times at night now. He wakes up crying and screaming. He doesn't want to sleep at 7 anymore and fights and fights untiil 9-10 before he gives in. He sometimes would be able to fall back asleep, but this time around he won't. The only way to calm him down the past few days was to breastfeed him which sometimes even that, he would wake up about 30 minutes after a feeding crying again. Not only can we not stand him being so upset and crying, but we are so worn out and tired becuase we aren't getting sleep. My husband and I both work, so this is making it rough at work too.

Any suggestions of what to do? Everyone says, when teeth start coming in, there is nothing you really can do. We have tried baby tyenol, teething tablet, teething rings...you name it, we tried it.

What can I do next?

Are you sure it's not an ear infection?

Freeze wet, quartered baby washcloths stacked in a ziplock bag. Let him gnaw on them as needed.

Good luck!

After fostering over 60 infants and adopting five of them I have a theory. If you've checked with the doctor and he's not actually sick with an ear infection or sore throat from drainage my guess is he's going through a growth spurt which messes everything up with your baby especially their sleep patterns. I cannot tell you how many nights I've stood by a crib patting a back and singing until a little one went to sleep. I don't like the cry it out method but that's just me, you're the Mom and you know what is going to work best for your baby. Give it just a little time, keep to your same schedule and when the growth spurt is over he'll go back to his regular sleeping patterns.....until the next growth spurt.

I'd take him to the ped and make sure he doesn't have an ear infection. If you're giving him tylenol and he's still waking up in pain, I'd be worried that you're missing something.

The first one is always bad. There really is not a whole lot you can do. It will be over soon and he'll get back to sleeping normally. Good luck!

It sounds more like an ear infection than teething (at least in my house). Tylenol or teething tablest sometimes together have always done the trick unless an ear infection is present. The Dr told us, if they usually sleep at night and now are not, then get the ears checked even if no fever.

Try the swing, or an upright postion(storller). When teething they feel a lot of pain and pressure hence it is worse at night.

Good Luck and this soon shall pass.
