Hi, my 10 month old does NOT hold his own bottle or sippy cup. I don't understand why. I've seen other babies much smaller and younger than him holding their own cups. We've been trying to show him since he's been 5 months old. Any advice as to how to teach or guide him, please help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone, I feel a lot better knowing that my son is normal, and that other moms are in the same boat as I am.

Hi, I don't let my babies hold their bottles! I'm on my third and my thinking is that it will be less hard for them to give up the bottle if they never hold it. I believe in getting rid of bottle at 1 yr, however. The other great thing about them not holding bottle, is that they can't take it to bed with them. Babies that drink milk lying down have more ear infections.

i agree with most of the moms... can't or wont? My daughter got lazy and knew that i would hold it... so i knew i had to stop holding it for her... sure enough she started holding it herself... and as far as it being easier to transition from a bottle to a cup if they dont hold it is most likely not true... all the babies in my family switched to a sippy cup with no problem after holding thier own bottle especially if you find a cup they like. GOOD LUCK!!

My daughter didn't really hold her own until the past few weeks (she's 11 months). A lot of times she just let's me do it but most of the time she holds her own now.

My son will be 10 months in a couple of weeks, and he won't hold it either. He'll play with a sippy with handles, but he won't tip it up. He chews on the nipples of bottles and sippys but won't suck on them. He is breast fed, but takes a pacifier. Why he won't suck on a bottle or sippy I have no idea. I finally gave up on them and just give him sips out of a cup.

My daughter did the same thing, she just refused to hold it herslef she was probably 11 months before she would start holding it. i think it was because she was lazy and knew that we would hold it for her. I would give here the bottle and put her hands on it and if she let go I would try it again unitl finally she got the hang of it

The next time their is a feeding. Place your son's hand over the bottle while you showing him your still holding bottom. He should pick it up rather quickly. Some children take longer to learn things verses others. Depends on wether they are premature etc. Many reasons and possibilities try not to give up hope so quickly. As you already may know. Your child is picking up your emotions. So if you seem to be frustrated on this task or any others. So will he. Keep in mind your only human but, as a Mother you have to be on top of things not matter what it is.

hi, i had the same problem with my daughter now 9 months old.. i use to get agitated when she wouldn't hold it also.. i suggest putting the bottle/ sippy cup in front of him when he is hungry and he will eventually try to hold it his self, when you see this just assist him alittle by putting him in a comfortable position. Also when he is ready he will do it, b/c i am sure he probably is doing things other 10 month old cannnnot.

have you tried a sippy with handles? the handles could make it easier for him to hold.

He should be much older now, and is probably on a sippy cup? We never let our boys hold thier own bottle so they wouldn't get attached to it but rather enjoy the time with us feeding time. That way after they were 1, we did a switch to a sippy cup and they never complained. They eventually started holding it on their own.

My first son never held his bottle OR his sippy cup for the longest time. My 10 month old Preston will grab the bottom of the bottle b/c it's one of those bottomless bag ones, but I still hold it for him. If you want to make it a little easier...even though ur about to be done with bottles, I've got this bottle called the hands free pacifeeder. It sells on ebay for around 21 dollars..thats shipping and all. I got it when my son was 5 months but only use it when I really need it.

My son Sam NEVER held his own bottle/cup when he was a baby. We took him off the bottle right before his first birthday and he drank only out of a sippy cup. After a few days off the bottle, he would hold his own sippy cup. I think he just liked being held and having us hold the bottle, it was more of an issue of won't, not can't.

Babies do things when they are ready, it is hard to "make" them do things.

My boys held their own bottles and cups at about 8 months. You just sit it there and when he gets hungry or thirsty, he will pick it up.

You have to stop holding it for him. He will figure it out. The first baby is the hardest because you are learning. My second child is 18 months old now and he is so independant because I let him figure it out. He refused help until he needs it with anything.

My daughter is 10 months and did the same thing but I found something awesome! Nuby makes a strawcup that has a straw that doesn't leak! The straw feels alot like a nipple, and my daughter didn't have to tip it up to drink out of it. I got to the point where I put her hands on the bottle and let go so she would hold it and she just sucks up the straw! it's the first sippy cup or bottle that she has drank out of without help! Good luck!

can't or won't? My son, rarely held his own bottle but that's because as soon as he was having trouble I "helped" him. My guess is he just relied on me to hold it for him. Now that we're onto a sippy cup, he's got it on his own. Took awhile for me to remember however at first if you fill the cup all the way, sometimes it's too heavy. Babies will do things on their own time and he may surprise you one day! Best of luck!
