11 Month Old Won't Hold His Bottle!

My son will be turning 1 on Sept 2nd and he still will not hold his own bottle! I've tried showing him several times how to do it and other times I just refuse to hold it for him to try and make him do it himself but he gets so frustrated and mad, I end up having to hold it for him. Sometimes he will hold it when it is full but as soon as it gets to the point where he has to tilt it up to get anything out he gives up and just throws the bottle at me. Have any of you experienced this and what did you end up doing about it? Thanks for all the advice!

It is actually a good thing that he does not hold his own bottle. Why? He is not attached to it, and therefor, when the time comes to get rid of the bottles and have only a sippy cup, he will not have near the issues that some kids have. I would suggest giving him a sippy cup that has a straw to suck, he will not have to tilt it to get a drink (since he wont tilt a bottle to drink. It usually doesn't take long for a baby to get the hang of sucking thru a straw since they have sucked a bottle all their life. (My child was the same as yours and we had a very easy transition from bottle to straw sippy cup). I would stop trying to get him to hold his bottle. It is recommended to get rid of the bottles after they have their 1st birthday, so get him to the straw sippy cup. I hopes this helps.

Straw sippy cups work well for some kids.

What about a sippy cut with handles? Sometimes these are easier to tip back.At this point you should be hopefully getting rid of the bottle when he turns 1 anyhow so if you are going to push for him to do it himself it should probably be with a cup. We didn't let either of our children hold their own bottles- this was a time for us to bond and hold them and then they never got attached to the bottle because it was never really THEIRS.

My boys wouldn't hold their bottles either until my nanny laid it on their chest and they had to pick it up if they wanted to drink. They are 8 months and can hold their own now.

Neither of my 3 kids did either. It wasn't that they couldn't, they just didn't want to. It really is a good thing, I always held them with they had a bottle so they never got used to carrying one around. It made getting rid of the bottle by age 1 a BREEZE! Enjoy the snuggle time you have...it will be soon gone!

I don't remember exactly when my son started holding his own bottle, but I remember thinking he was taking forever! One day he did it and never looked back, so this too will pass:) Hang in there!!

My two year old, to this day, doesnt get the whole "tip it up and drink it" idea. Some kids dont.
Buy a different cup. Dont force them.

Our daughter was ready for a sippy cup about this age. You may want to give him one with his dinner and see if he is ready to just give up the bottle.
