10 Month Old Can Not Handle Food?

My 10 month old is breastfed, and I have tried since he was 6 months old to feed him food (baby food, real food). But everytime he has anything other than breastmilk he spends the rest of the day vomiting! Not just spitting up, REAL vomiting. I have tried to figure out if it is a certain food, but it is EVERYTHING... Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like to wean him when he is a year old, but I can't do that if he can't eat real food! I just don't know what to do!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I thought I would add a little bit more. He is fine with liquids, it is just food. His older sister has a dairy allergy, so I guess he is at a higher risk for allergies, but he would have to be one of those kids that are allergic to pretty much everything to be like this (I would think). I waited to talk to his doctor about it, because he had an umbilical hernia so I thought that was just the problem, but he had surgery a few months ago on it and that didn't fix the problem. We are a military family, and it is extremely hard to get a doctor appointment at our base and have been trying since after his surgery to get one. I'll keep trying. Thanks for the help! I'll let you all know what happens.

i had the same problem with my litle girl and i know how frustrating it is!! actually after 14 months everything was normal and she started eating very good so, i would suggest mixing just a little rice cereal or oatmeal with your breast milk (make it very liquid) and try to give tiny bits of bananas, cooked carrot pieces... e.t.c... i think some babies are much more delicate about introducing new stuff, so try to make it little by little, dont worry, eventually he will eat...
good luck!

Does he do this with juices as well? I only ask because maybe it is a texture thing. It seems pretty odd that he would throw up like that unless it is texture of foods (even baby food) or maybe he is one of those that has allergies to most things in foods.

My only advice to you is that at 10 months they really need to have solids in addition to breast milk or formula, which I am sure you know. He needs to see the doc right away so the problem can be identified and corrected. It may just be a simple solution.

Good luck and let us know how he is and what happened.

Every little one is different and it is actually totally healthy for a child to have nothing but breast milk until one year. My youngest wouldn't eat anything until about 12 1/2 to 13 months, and then it was just little bits. He's now 21 months and eats everything. Some kids are just slower than others. You may not be able to wean at a year, but if it makes you feel any better, we're the only country in the world that recommends weaning at a year. The World Health Organization actually recommends AT LEAST the first 2 years. He'll let you know when he is ready to eat something---some babies digestion just matures a little slower than others.
If it continues after he is a year then you may have a problem. Have you tried taking him to a chiropractor? It might be a hiatal hernia (when the stomach goes up under the diaphragm). It's totally easy to adjust and that may solve the problem.
Good luck!

I think that the vomiting is a little extreme, and would be for a doctor to comment on.
If it was me, I would hold off for awhile on foods. Eat in front of him and see if he shows any interest. My son watched sooo intently when he was really ready to try, and would even reach for it.
As for weaning, that is a personal choice, but do know, that if you can switch to milk (depending on allergies) at 1 year, you can still wean to that, it doesn't have to be only to solid foods. Good luck.

Ugh. I'd go see the allergist and maybe get a referral to a gastroenterologist. It could be allergies, intolerances, food aversion, FPIES, EE, EGID... some of those are best treated as early as possible.

I know a great allergy group on Yahoo if you need information/support. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/TerrificKidsWFA/ There are 700+ members in this group, so it's a great resource for finding people who have been through what you're going through.

If he's literally vomiting after every food I'd wait to introduce anything else (I know, obvious) but you might try a food with a low allergenicity to see if that helps. I've got a toddler who is intolerant to a bunch of stuff (including RICE!!) but he's been fine all along with sweet potatoes, carrots & squash. (Yeah, he's a little orange. LOL) Here's a list of allergenicity of different foods. http://www.allergynutrition.com/resources/FAQ/15/Foods%20... or here's a tiny version: http://tinyurl.com/6frugs in case the first doesn't work. If you do try foods (and he can keep any of them down) you might want to keep a food diary. Some foods can cause delayed reactions, too.

Best of luck! I know, this food thing can be a nightmare... hang in there!

Have you talked to the pediatrician about this problem? If he is vomiting all day, there may be a physical reason for it that needs to be checked out. Possibly some sort of obstruction or narrowing of the esophagus that won't allow the solids to pass through. It could just be textures, but that usually results in immediate gagging, not day long upchucking. Good luck!

have you had him tested for reflux disease? My nephew was soaking a bath towel at every feeding, even when my sister was nursing. It took him puking at a doc appt for the doc to finally hear her (oh, baby's spit up..) & test him-he had reflux disease. He was on a reflux med (don't remember which one, it's a baby version of an adult reflux med) for about a year & it gradually faded away. He's 10 now & has no problems.
I suggest you share your concerns w/the doc & keep pushing til you get reflux testing done.
Good luck!
