1 Year Old Is a Tooth Grinder

My little guy has been grinding his teeth since he's had some on top and bottom. At first, I thought it was a matter of getting used to his teeth. Now that it's been happening for a couple of months, it just makes me cringe. Is it normal? At what point do we need to seek help for him? (I try to give him a snack to chew on to deter the grinding, but I don't want food to be a go-to answer.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Just like that, he doesn't grind anymore. I guess he is used to the teeth that he has. I suppose he will start again when another comes in, but it is nice to know it will run its course and go away. :) Thanks for reassuring me that would probably be the case!

Yes it is normal. He has something new to experiment with and the fact that he gets a reaction from you makes it even more fun. Just try to ignore it and I think it will become old news soon. If not, I don't think there is much you can do. My sister is in her 20's and she has grinded her teeth in her sleep since she was little. The only thing she can do is wear a gaurd, but that is not really an option for your little one at his age.

I don't know what to tell you because I'm in the same situation except my little girl is 2 and she's been doing it since she got teeth, I cant stand the sound so I usually do the food or drink thing. I also do it in my sleep also and I'm in my mid 20s. I did it so much that I had to go to dentist so they could grind down my other teeth because I ended up getting my jaw out of place. I don't know if there is anything to do to stop it.

Oh yuck, that brings back some nasty memories. Yes it's normal, my daughter did that as well around 1 year. We would stick a pacifier in her mouth to get her to stop, but you may not be using them at 1 year old, we were. It eventually stops, once they get over that newness of the teeth they usually stop.. Good luck.

unfortunately there's not much you can do for that. I have four boys and they all did that. They mostly now just do it sometimes in their sleep. When they were awake and did it I would try to hold there mouth still and tell them not to do it. I don't think that really helped though. I think it's mostly because they have discovered a new noise they can make. Hopefully he will outgrow it.

I am a dental hygienist of 9 years and my Dentist says it is very normal for kids to grind their teeth. There's not much you can do about it except try to deter them from doing it. At age One, they don't really understand what they are doing. They usually grow out of it, but it can last for a while, on and off. Adults get nightguards, but kids can't get those, too much of a pain for them. So unfortunately, you kind of have to live with it. I'm sorry, it's worse hearing them do it than it is on them. My son is 2 and does it sometimes and now I can tell him to stop, but when he was 1 we just tried to distract him with something else. So it's very common and there is no big solution. Good luck and I hope it goes away soon!
