I am looking for a in home care person for my grandparents. My grandpa has Alzheimers but it is not too advanced and my grandmother is a wonderful woman who is an amazing cook but it is getting to hard for her to take care of my grandpa all by herself. She has had two knee replacements and gets exhausted easily. We do not need a nurse we just need in home care, driving to dr's appts and so forth. The problem is I am worried about trusting the person who lives there and how I can find someone who is very trustworthy and know they will do a good job. Can anyone help?
I don't know if you want to pay for care or try insurance. If you want to try insurance, I would contact the Medicare insurance company to see if they are eligible for IHSS-- In Home Supportive Services. They provide a multitude of services and many are eligible.
You can also contact your Area Agency on Aging and see what resources they might have.

You might want to try an agency first, I know certain agencies do all the background check and pre-screens there employees. Also you are not going to know if that person is trustworthy until you try. I was a certified nursing assistant for 5 years and my last year I moved in with an ederly lady and her son who was a single dad of two kids. I stayed there for about a year and I loved every bit of my job, and the family loved me. You might go through a couple of people until you find the right one for your grandparents. Don't just settle for anyone, no matter how fustrating it is. References is the key!!!!!!
How about trying a local nursing school? Are you looking for an RN? If not, maybe a student who goes to school at night. If you need FT care, perhaps one student who goes to school in the day and then another who goes to school at night. It is hard finding someone you trust. We had to get someone for both of my grandparents, and it took a long time. Unfortunately, the girl we had is now working FT as an RN at Kaiser. Or, you can ask your doctor to refer you to a home health care nursing agency and they will send someone to your house, but it is expensive and insurance doesn't cover it. That's how we met our caregiver. We originally paid $22 per hour and most of it went to the agency. But since we liked her, she quit the agency and we paid her $17 per hour since she didn't have to split the fees with the agency. Depending on what you need to have done, i'm sure the price varies.

I am so sorry you have to go through this. I know how very hard this is. My father (actually step-dad) lived with me for the last five years of his life. He too was an amazing man from WW11. They don't make them like that any more. I'm not sure where you are and where your grandparents are but I would suggest a couple of things. First contact the local senior center if the town they live in has one. Thousand Oaks has a nice one. They may have people who can give you refrrences then make sure you actually call and check on them. Second do your grandparents belong to a church if so see if you can find someone from the church that would be able to help out. Are you looking for someone to live with them or just help out?? You could also check a local college for maybe a student who is looking for a place to stay who is studying either geriatics or nursings if you are looking for a live in. I would contact the counseling office and then again call on their character refrences. If you just need someone to stop in and visit maybe help out a little it should be fairly easy to find. I have done this on several occasions for people through my church who didn't have family around. Good luck. Your grandparents are lucky to have you for a greandaughter.
Where are you located? I work for ONEgeneration and we have a daytime adult daycare and childcare facilty that is wonderful and we are one of two designated Alzheimer's resource centers in the valley (Lake Balboa/Van Nuys).
