Clotty Periods One Year After Giving Birth

My daughter is turning 1 at the end of this month, and my period resumed when she turned 12 weeks old. Within a few months, it became regular, time-wise, even though I was nursing until 11 months. But it's been very clotty every time! Does anyone know if this is normal? I'd like to try to get pregnant again in a couple of months, but I'm concerned about how the clotting will affect that. The periods are heavy, too.

What can I do next?

I had never had clots until after I had my first child. It didn't affect me getting pregnant. (My kids are only 10 1/2 months apart) I still am very clotty the first few days and my doctor isn't concerned because I don't have any pain or anything like that.

You can help to balance out and lighten periods. I found great help by Dr. John Lee in his book 'What your Doctor May Not Have Told You About Premenopause' and gives simple answers for women of all ages. Heavy periods are an indication of hormone imbalance and can be simply helped with natural progesterone. I doubt that heavy periods which include clots would keep you from concieving another baby. Your body should produce the extra progesterone it needs to carry a pregnancy. Because of the heavy blood lose though, you should get your hemoglobin level checked to make sure you are not anemic and therefore healthy enough to go through a pregnancy. I like to get a ferritin count as well to see how much iron the body is actually storing. You can get in trouble real quick if you have a real long heavy period. It's all in the book.

The clotting during your periods will not affect your chances of conceiving another child. I have always had some clotting during my periods, and I have 3 wonderful, healthy boys. I have always had heavy periods, and mine got even heavier after I had my kids. Don't worry any about the clotting, you will be able to have another child, and there wont be any problems.

I have never had clotty periods, but mine became extremely heavy after I had my tubes tied. I would talk to your doctor before trying again.

I always have a couple of days where my period is very heavy and clotty. I've talked to my OBGYN a couple of times about it, but she said there's no reason for concern for it. Once you are not on birth control, your periods are expected to be heavier since there are hormones in the pill that helps control symptoms like pms and heavy, irregular bleeding. About the only thing you can do to help it is either go on the pill or get a surgical procedure where they literally go in and scrape off some of the lining of your uterus. This procedure costs thousands of dollars, and the pill doesn't work well with my body, so I've chosen to just deal with it.

I would talk to my doctor. You may have some residual tissue build up and he may suggest a DNC to make sure everything is clean and healthy before you get pregnant again.

My doc told me that most women get heavier periods after having children and they can be more painful.

I could be wrong, but I don't think a lot of clotting is normal. How big are the clots? If they are large, or painful to pass, talk to your doctor. It could be a sign of something wrong. In fact, I think I would call your doctor anyway. If nothing else, to rule out that anything is wrong.
