I Do My Best Thinking...

I do my best thinking…

… on my daughter’s floor.

Because after the bedtime routine is done (sometimes lasting anywhere from 30-45 minutes for teeth brushing, three bedtime stories and a song), she wants us to lie down with her.

Naturally, we don’t fit in her toddler bed, so we lie down on the floor next to her for a few minutes each night. My husband and I alternate.

Some nights, I’m impatient.

Come on! It’s getting late. I have emails to answer, chores to finish, and all I want to do is curl up with a book or Netflix for the night.

Other nights, I fight sleep.

It’s a battle just to stay awake, weary from the day.

And some nights, like tonight, I do my best thinking.

I run through a recent argument with my husband, where I realize I was overreacting to something he brought up.

I didn’t see it during the chaos of the day, but it comes to me clearly as I watch her night-night turtle beam up stars and the moon on my daughter’s ceiling.

Obviously, I hadn’t meant to overreact, but I needed those couple of minutes to think through the argument.

Sometimes that act of slowing down, clearly thinking through something, is one that’s foreign to those of us with young kids.

Some nights I hate losing the time to this extra step; tonight I’m grateful for it as it’s made me a better wife.

And just like that, I come downstairs after that night a different person.

I’m softer, and I give my husband a kiss, and am grateful that he’s my partner on days where we are running from sun-up to sun-down.

And most importantly, it’s all because my daughter relishes the comfort of knowing her mom and dad are nearby as she falls asleep.

May she always be that secure and safe as she falls asleep, and may we all remember that in these days of run, run, run – that slowing down can be the key to unlocking our best thoughts.

Even on the floor.
