5 Scary Good Halloween Crafts

There’s never a bad time to sit down at the table with your kids and bond over a fun craft, but Halloween — and holidays, in general — particularly lend themselves to this! We recommend carving out some time this season to break out the (washable) paint, glue sticks, child-friendly scissors, and some good music and craft away with your little ones. From painted, magical unicorn pumpkins to mummy mason jar luminaries, the below ideas are a great place to start.


Mummy Mason Jar Luminaries
“One festive Halloween party craft our team at GigMasters loves are Mummy Mason Jar Luminaries. They’re easy to create, mess free, and will light up the room on those dark October nights,” said Alison Bernstein, general manager for GigMasters.com. “All that’s needed are enough mason jars for everyone, gauze bandage, googly eyes and flameless votive candles.” Wrap the gauze around the mason jars (feel free to use a touch of glue if necessary) and then stick on those googly eyes wherever you want! Throw in the votive candle and you’re good to go.


Pumpkin Fizz Art
For an interactive craft that combines science and fun, try your hand and fizz art! “To create pumpkin fizz art, you’ll need citric acid, food coloring, baking soda, paper pumpkin cutouts, and googly eyes,” said Bernstein. “To get crafting, mix two tablespoons of baking soda with two tablespoons of water and paint the mixture over the paper pumpkin cutouts. Next, prepare the colored solution using the food coloring, citric acid and water and get painting!”


Unicorn Pumpkin
No sharp knives necessary for this fun pumpkin decorating craft! All you need to create a unicorn pumpkin is a small to medium sized pumpkin (real or fake works), paint and brushes, a marker, glue, and rainbow yarn and foam for the unicorn’s hair and horn! To complete the project, lay out some newspaper and paint your pumpkin whatever color you prefer. For some extra magic, throw a little glitter on slightly wet paint. Once dry, draw on eyes and a mouth, then hot glue a foam horn and hair and you’re all set.


Radioactive Slime
OK, so it’s not really radioactive, but it’s fun to pretend! There are loads of DIY slime recipes on out there, and we love this glow-in-the-dark, Halloween spin featured by Michaels. All you need is craft glue, coloring, glow-in-the-dark pony beads, glitter, and treat bags. If you want to cut to the chase or simplify your life, opt for a premade kit. Paper Plate Masks
You may think of paper plate masks as old school, but kids will love this fun and easy craft — especially if it means they get to play dress up at the end of the day! “Grab household paper plates, markers, paint, string, googly eyes and any other crafting goods you feel inspired by, and you’re good to go,” said Bernstein. “If you’re throwing a party, kick mask making up a notch by bringing in a caricaturist, who can add to the fun by creatively capturing images of kids with their masks and allow all party guests to have a great keepsake to take home.” Some mask ideas include their favorite TV characters, friendly monsters, silly witches, furry animals and super heroes!
