I am an advanced practice psychiatric nurse (ARNP), specializing in psychiatry, also the parent of a special needs child, with a special interest in children, adolescents, and adults who may have their own special needs or developmental challenges. I perform psychiatric and mental health, "wholistic" evaluations, taking not only any potential or ascertainable psychiatric symptoms into considerations but also elements of the persons' physical health and environment of which they live with the goal to ascertain if the person being evaluated would benefit from some type of psychiatric medication intervention, therapy, or referral to other provider/agency for their specific circumstances to ensure that all percieved and potential needs are met. Some common referrals are to individual therapists, mental health community case management services, services through the Sedgwik County Developmental Disability program, primary care provider or specialist, educational advocate services, patient assistance programs for difficult to attain, essential medications, parent support worker and or advocate for the family, and many more. Besides evaluations, also provide ongoing psychotropic medication managment and education, and limited, supportive, brief psychotherapy. Also, by prior arrangement, attend school meetings with the parent or guardian not only to advocate for the pupil, but to provide education to the academic staff regarding how certain disorders or challenges can and often do impact the pupils' ability to learn, what accomodations may strengthen the learning experience. Being the parent of a special needs child, I have worn both hats as that of the parent in an endless search for answers and seeking help for my child, which numerous providers later on our "nightmare" journey, I was able finally obtain some of what I was in search for. The other hat that I have worn is working with parents, families, and guardians, who may be on the very similar journey for their child or loved one, is that of a provider. Besides humility, this has made me only more dedicated to the clients that I have the benefit of serving, making sure I am listening to what I am being told and concerns, and to do the best, comprehensive service I am able to perform. I can say, I would want no less for my child or family member.
