Hello!
My name is Amy Owen and I’m a birth doula.
I serve all surrounding hospitals in the area, as well as the Bryn Mawr Birth Center.
A doula...
• Recognizes birth as a key life experience that the mother will remember all her life
• Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
• Assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for the birth
• Stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor
• Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint and assistance to the woman in getting the information she needs to make good decisions.
• Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and clinical care providers
• Perceives her role as one who nurtures and protects the woman's memory of her birth experience

Hiring Amy to be my doula for the birth of my Son was one of the best decisions that my husband and I made. She was great through the entire thing. Amy was so helpful with getting me ready for the birth. We talked as much as I needed and she helped me get educated on the information I was interested in. She made me aware of things that I needed to think about and the things I needed to make decisions on. During the actual birthing process, she was a great cheerleader. She came up with good ways for me to deal with the pain. She kept up the positive affirmations that I needed. If something did not work, she moved on to something that did. I really liked how she worked with my husband to make sure I was comfortable. They were a great team. She helped me for many hours to deal with the pain without pain medication and when I told her I could not do it anymore without pain med, she supported me in my decision and continued to help me. It was nice having someone there that had gone through what I was going through. It was also nice knowing that she was on my side for what I wanted or needed. If the nurses said something that I did not understand, she was able to step in by getting clarification or have them explain it better. My birth was not an easy birth at all, but I could not imagine having my birth experience without Amy because of how she helped me through the good and the bad parts. She stayed as long as she could after the birth and was really helpful with the post op visit. I was having problems with breastfeeding and she had some helpful tips for pumping that I did not hear from anyone else and it worked much better. I would say Amy is worth her weight in Gold and anyone that chooses her as a doula would be lucky to have her. I would highly recommend Amy Owen for anyone who wants a better birth experience.
Amy was a great Doula she was there for me through it all. During my pregnancy she listened to all of my concerns and helped answer my questions. She was so helpful during the labor of my baby, she arrived at The Birth Center before i even did and greeted me with a glass of water. We joke and had the best time and when things got serious and painful because I had no medication she was just there to help do whatever needed to be done. She sat with me, prayed with me, and held my foot as I gave birth to my baby boy!! She is an amazing woman and she truly loves her job even though it isn't a job at all for her it's her joy and her life!! I would highly recommend her services!!

We hired Amy to be the doula at our second natural birth and she was great. Her prenatal check-ins were timely and I always appreciated having that extra point of contact from her. We didn't need much in the way of information because it wasn't our first natural birth, but she was so great about being available and answering the questions we did have. During the labor, she was extremely available by phone (I labored at home for most of it) and offered valuable advice and support. She met us at the hospital when it was time to go and was a great additional support person in the birthing suite, along with my husband. She took great pictures of my son right after birth and just provided a wonderful atmosphere and was extremely helpful during the transition part. I appreciated her post partum visit as well, because I needed to process a few things about the birth that only someone who was there would be able to understand. I would highly recommend Amy as a doula and we will be calling her again for our next baby!
Being first time parents, we were a little anxious about the whole birth process and especially the way things were handled in hospitals here. We had heard that doulas were a big help in providing support during the prenatal, hospital and postpartum stages and decided to look for one in the later stages of my pregnancy. I gave amy a call after looking at her references and when we finally did get to meet her, we knew we had found what we were looking for. Amy is a very cheerful, optimistic and positive person, somebody who we knew from the start would stay that way throught the birth process even if we started freaking out at some point. I gave birth at St. Mary's hospital, and though I wanted a natural birth, I had to do an emergency c-section in the end, something i dreaded and was very unhappy about. Amy was not only there for me throughout my labor but also consoled me when she knew i had to go through the section. When I close my eyes before nodding off to sleep, I can still hear her cheery voice telling me, Bindiya you're doing awesome! Well, amy, you were awesome too! Thank you for all your love and support and help in bringing our baby girl home
I gave birth to my first child at Abington Memorial Hospital and Amy Owen was our doula. Her prenatal visit was very helpful in answering our questions about what to expect and what her role as a doula would be during our delivery. We chose to birth all natural and Amy supported us in our decision. When my water broke and we called Amy in the middle of the night, she came to our home as soon as we wanted her there. I labored for 8.5 hours with Amy constantly by my side and she was such a big help. Her calm voice and constant encouragement is what got me through my labor. After I had been pushing for about 30 minutes, my baby's heart rate dropped dangerously low and the doctors wanted to perform a cesarean. Amy convinced them to let us try one more attempt at getting the heart rate to rise so that I could continue with my chosen birth plan. I was so greatful to her for stepping in and advocating for us. Being first time parents, we didn't really know what was going on and what our options were. In the end, we had to change our plans and deliver by cesarean but it wasn't without a fight. When they rushed me into the operating room, Amy comforted my husband and reassured him that we were both going to be ok. He definitely needed that because he was very scared of how fast everything was happening and about not exactly knowing what was going on. After my operation, Amy joined us again in my postpardum room and talked about the delivery and everything to make sure that we were ok and comfortable with everything that had happened. My baby was born by mid-morning but Amy stayed with us all day until we told her we were ready for her to leave and even then she told us to call her if we needed anything. I don't think we could have had such a wonderful birthing experience without Amy and we will be using her again as our doula if we find ourselves blessed with another child.
I gave birth to my 4th daughter at the Bryn Mawr Birth Center the other day and Amy Own was my doula. I don't think I can express in words how much it meant to me to have Amy as my doula. I liked Amy from the minute I met her. She is very easy to get along with and I could tell right away that she was someone that I could depend on. When I went into labor I called her and let her know that we were heading to the Birth Center. She got there right before I did and she was an amazing support for me during my labor. She is very intuitive and seemed to know exactly what to do to help get me through the tougher parts of labor. She complemented my husband, midwife, and nurse perfectly and I was able to achieve the natural birth that I had hoped for.
After my birth I had some complications that required a hospital transfer and Amy did not leave my side until she knew that I was going to be ok. She went above and beyond what I wanted from a doula and greatly exceeded all my expectations. I truly cannot say enough about Amy and I recommend her highly.
