Has anyone heard of the zinc poisining in the popular denture creams like Fixodent and Poligrip? Well, it is causing some users to lose their mobility and their limbs feel numb. Its deadly. Well, I am pretty sure that its the same zinc in the diaper creams to? Has anyone heard of anything like this before? Does anyone use an alternative to common diaper rash oinments that contain zinc?

What can I do next?

There's a BIG difference between ingesting something and using something topically. We all need small amounts of zinc (and other metals) in our diet (think centrum; from a to zinc), but too much leads to toxicity. ((Too much of ANYTHING leads to toxicity / overdosing)). BUT diaper cream is not taken internally. It specifically SAYS "Do not take internally." As long as you're not putting a tablespoon in her mouth twice a day (like denture wearers), you should be fine.

But as per your actual Q: Vaseline or Beeswax

My natural baby store, Babies Bottoms and More, carries the Earth Mama Angel Baby brand. They have a Diaper Cream that is all-natural and plant-based. It's also naturally antibacterial due to the essential oils which is nice. Here's a link for it: http://babiesbottomsandmore.com/emabbottombalm.html
You can also get it at Sprouts, I think.

I think that if diaper rash cream were a culprit that the story would have been about zinc, and it was not. It was about denture cream containing zinc. Big difference. We absorb alot of things through the skin, but there is a huge difference between how a bottom absorbs and how a mucus membrane aborbs, and babys do not swallow in the general vancinty of where we apply it. Frankly, babies don't even wear it that long a time in their lives, and most don't have it on all the time, just the few times in their lives that they end up with a rash. We just don't need to worry about this, why heap on one more thing? There is just nothing here to talk about. Taking any supplement orally for some pie in the sky result, and ending up poisoned, denture cream use, and babies bottoms are just not even of the same family. How about this...the paper in cigarettes contains additonal toxins that cause smokers some of their issues with emphasema...so...get rid of that paper in your printer, and all your books, it "might" have some toxins too! Neither is logical.

If it bothers you, use something without zinc. Your hair dryer is the best diaper rash ender that was ever invented. No worries about what is in that tube.

YOu're not putting the diaper cream in your mouth like denture cream! Sun block also has zinc in the form of zinc oxide. If you want to start getting worried about that. I agree with Martha R.
But, A&D makes a formula that has petroleum jelly and lanolin.

Hi Natty,

We use a lotion called Renew as a diaper cream/barrier cream. It works better, heals and isn't all clumpy, basically it feels good going on. Zinc poisoning is very dangerous. I had a friend that thought she was getting rid of her allergy symptoms by taking zinc but didn't realized she could get a heavy metal poisoning. Allergy season came along and she doubled up her doses and had exactly the symptoms you described. If anyone has ever heard me say anything on this site I recommend natural stuff all the time but not everything natural can be used in excess....zinc is one of them.

Zinc can be absorbed topically. Of course it is not as bad as taking it internally but it is a heavy metal and the toxicity will build over time. Traces of zinc are needed but adding to what we get naturally in our food and water supply is really unnecessary. If you want any info on the Renew, PM me here and I can send you some docs.

Regards,

M.
